Description

Feminine human beings begin the process of metamorphosis around 10 years of age. They are taught to desert flowers they have grown and watch them wilt, trading their blossoms for apples, and allowing them to decay by bacteria or fungi. Do they choose to suffer in isolation or revolt against biology (which may ruin them)? In a story told through puppetry, music, and verbatim, three beings abandon and reclaim their identities during a bio-revolution in a world not made for them. The funeral for Bearry Styles begins at 11:25 AM.

This was a fun comedy about the uncomfortable topic of womanhood. The live music was the best part for me but the actors also did a great job.

It was such a fun show! Lots of ups and downs keeping on the toes, with good music and covering multiple themes in young women’s lives really give an introspective view, and beelzeboob was very funny

I loved this play!! So fun and lighthearted while still managing to bring me to tears. Obsessed with the opening scene (gotta see it tor yourself!). Beautifully written comedic and touching commentary on growing up and ‘blossoming’ into a young woman. I was impressed to find that it was written by the plays centering character, Ivy, who is taking us along on her whimsical journey to womanhood. This play is sweet, fun, and moving, leaving me feeling a sense of togetherness and kinship with the women in the cast, and frankly, women everywhere. Original live music on electric and acoustic guitar added another layer of authenticity and satisfying juxtaposition to the already relatable, ‘we girls are going through all of this together’ feel of the play. It does a great job reminding us that all of the painful, awkward, embarrassing, upsetting moments we’ve experienced as young girls are almost completely universal. A big yes from me!!! Go see it!!

A Hilarious Dive into the Pain of Puberty
This Fringe production delivers a unique and insightful exploration of puberty, adolescent relationships, and burgeoning sexuality, all wrapped in a whimsical, darkly comedic package. At the heart of this theatrical gem is a riveting performance by Dylan Carter, whose Beetlejuice-inspired character anchors the show with a perfect blend of mischief and vulnerability. Carter’s portrayal adds an edge to the play, embodying the chaotic energy of adolescence with an intensity that is both hilarious and unsettling.
The play’s narrative successfully transports the audience back to the painful, awkward moments of youth, capturing the universal experience of growing up. The script smartly navigates the minefield of teenage years, from the agony of first crushes to the confusion of changing bodies, all while maintaining a sharp, self-aware humor that resonates deeply. The use of music throughout the production is particularly noteworthy, seamlessly integrating into the story to elevate the emotional beats and underscore the characters' turmoil.
A bold choice in the production is the centering of men and the male gaze, which, while potentially controversial, is executed with a clear intent. This focus serves to highlight the often overwhelming presence of the male gaze in the life of a teenage girl, shedding light on the pressures and expectations imposed from a young age. This perspective adds a layer of critical commentary that enriches the play’s exploration of adolescence.
Adding to the production’s charm is the whimsical use of puppetry, which injects a sense of absurdity and humour into the more serious themes. The puppetry not only provides comic relief but also serves as a visual metaphor for the ridiculousness and surreal nature of puberty itself, reminding us all just how bizarre growing up can be.
Overall, this play is a bold, creative, and thoroughly entertaining exploration of adolescence. It’s a must-see for anyone looking to laugh and cringe as they are transported back to the tumultuous days of their own youth.
