Description

School friends Amelia, Poppy and Lauren are wild camping in the Northumberland forest. As the woods darken around them and tensions flare, a watchful presence takes hold over the camp. A perfect boiling pot of paranoia, superstition and adolescent insecurity ensues that hangs on a chilling question: who is watching who? With female, queer and neurodivergent perspectives centre stage, Birdwatching is a new folk horror about the female experience that doesn’t look away. Black Bright Theatre Company returns to the Edinburgh Fringe following the success of their five-star, award nominated debut, The Hunger.

Incredibly subtle and nuanced character and world-building that has you hooked from the start. Great performances from the actors really bring the story to life. A huis clos that successfully creates genuine thrill and suspense - not an easy task! So glad I got to see their last performance.

5 stars! This play masters the art of suspense, mystery, betrayal, fear, and ultimately, heartbreak. The characters, brilliantly written by Maddie Farnhill, are so profound in their conversations about loneliness, isolation, and marginization. The subtle, yet creepy atmosphere had me hooked within seconds. I can’t tell you how long I’ve waited to see a play like this.

Tight and nuanced character writing with gripping performances. Subtle directorial choices that really add to the tone and effective atmosphere throughout.

Up there with the best couple of shows I saw at the Fringe this year. The horror source being the idea that there are people watching you was just genius for the theatre format. Horror theatre should be done more, and it should be done like this. I haven't shut up about this show since I saw it, go see this if you know what's good for you!

A nicely done, character-driven horror play. Nuanced writing and performance make us like and empathize with the trio of campers, hangups and all - and so when creepy things start impinging on their camping trip, we're emotionally there along with them. Excellent sound design fuels our imagination and helps keep us immersed. Well worth seeing.

An absolutely amazing show. An intense, intimate encounter in a mysterious setting. From start to finish, we were hooked by ‘Birdwatching’.

Blackbright have really outdone themselves here and the whole team should be extremely proud of what they’ve accomplished. It is obvious that every aspect of ‘Birdwatching’ has been handled with so much care and attention to detail and the whole experience was such a gorgeous melting pot of creativity. From the brilliant writing to the phenomenal acting and atmospheric lighting and sound design, the themes alluded to in ‘Birdwatching’ are crafted in such a thought provoking way, which will leave you thinking about the show long afterwards.

We would definitely recommend seeing this show if you can.

Randomly acquired ticket because I had a spare few hours and this was the earliest show I could find - what a great start to my Fringe! The 3 actors were brilliant, imaginative use of a very small space and minimal props, engaging characters and dialogue, all underpinned with a great self-written folk-tale. Recommended - and thank you ladies for a great show!

What a way to kick off a morning! In a dark forest, camping, ghost stories and revelations between friends. Love a bit of folk horror and this was an excellent atmospheric addition to the genre. More please

Absolutely loved this. A girls camping trip with a little bit of folklore mixed in. As a good horror should, it needs no special effects and no jump scares. The dread is conjured in the viewers ,mind. The characters were believable and relatable and their back stories are interesting and drive the narrative. An enjoyable hour that held the attention. Was written by a member of the cast. We need more writers and more unique drama like this. Fantastic.

I was so pleased that this performance is in the morning as I would not want to be walking home in the dark after watching Birdwatching.

This is a creepy and fearsomely feminine piece of new folk horror which will definitely satisfy those looking for something unsettling this Fringe.
