Description
School friends Amelia, Poppy and Lauren are wild camping in the Northumberland forest. As the woods darken around them and tensions flare, a watchful presence takes hold over the camp. A perfect boiling pot of paranoia, superstition and adolescent insecurity ensues that hangs on a chilling question: who is watching who? With female, queer and neurodivergent perspectives centre stage, Birdwatching is a new folk horror about the female experience that doesn’t look away. Black Bright Theatre Company returns to the Edinburgh Fringe following the success of their five-star, award nominated debut, The Hunger. Please note that while all media gallery content is provided by verified members of the event, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society does not review or approve this content before it is posted. ‘Birdwatching’ a story of friendship and a fear of being alone. You’ll find this show offers a showcase for 4 incredibly intense performers, and the story keeps you hooked from start to finish. The script is intriguing, with plenty of twists that really draw you in. I have to mention the lighting design— it adds a whole new layer to the experience something that is missing from many other fringe shows.

Reading the reviews I can only assume that they are written by family friends. I can't really see where the 5 star reviews come from. We left after 35 minutes because there was no action at all and it was the only fringe show we abandoned. For 35 Minutes we were watching 3 girls in the woods, not saying much. It was more of a school play. We were very disappointed.

I immediately had to give this show a standing ovation as it really was just amazing. All three characters were so believable and interesting and the acting was the best I saw at the fringe. I really hope this production gets taken somewhere and I shall be following Black Bright Theatre Company as I firmly believe that they have a great future ahead of them.

I was so surprised and blown away by this show. Simple, clever and original story telling. I can’t wait to see where it goes next!

Such a great show! Wish I hadn’t waited until the last day though, 100% would’ve come back to see it again.

Having seen Hunger last year and now this, it's fair to say I'm a Black Bright Theatre fanboy and hope they will return to the Fringe with a new horror story next year.

lots of great character building in a fairly short amount of time. acting was great and I was emotionally invested. the ending felt rushed, I wish it had been about 20 minutes longer

Great work! The three actors bring a range of characters to this play and built tension throughout. The set was simple but perfect for this piece.

An incredible performance, enthralling from the beginning to the end.
Suspense horror is my favourite kind of horror, so I am very happy to have both seen the play and received an art piece from the flyer.

A really enjoyable play with fantastic performances from all 3 actors. The through lines of female friendships and tensions within the clashing personalities were certainly scary enough when you can relate, remembering your own girls holidays! Great sound and minimalist set, perfect to put you in the environment without being distracting. My first show of the Fringe 2024 and what a way to start!

Atmospheric, exceptional acting, deftly handled issues of disability and sexuality, urge you to go and see it while you have the chance.

A really well made show with excellent performances. The horror elements were especially effective with how it ties into the themes and experiences of the characters. The venue as well is perfect as it really makes you feel like you're in a forest, adding to the already superb immersion. Found myself both scared and wowed.

Fabulous! An examination of the sometimes awkward dynamics of female relationships, interwoven with fright. It kept me on the edge of my seat, and I loved it !

Brilliant performances and writing all round - the chemistry between these actors is immense! Horror in theatre is hard to find at the Fringe, and these guys have aced it with an excellently told story. Well worth adding to your Fringe bucket list.

I saw the hunger last year which I loved. I’d no idea going in it was same company. But this was just phenomenal. Captured the folk horror Erie atmosphere. With really important and human themes. As a nuerodiverse actor myself could really relate. I loved this though sound scape, acting ,set just truly captivating from start to finish. I watch a lot of horror not much scares me. But there were bits that got me in this. 5 stars.

This show was very on brand for me, love folk horror and anything including a spooky story in a forest. Well written and acted, it created a deliciously scary atmosphere which I wasn't expecting first thing in the morning. 5 stars, no notes. Well done

Took my breath away. What an amazing show. Articulate, brilliant insight into the late teen/early 20s female psyche performed by highly talented actors. Just wow! A must-see.
This show has now taken our #1 spot for Fringe 2024.
Buy tix before word gets around!

WOW. Just wow. This show is gob-smackingly good. Skilfully written and beautifully performed. Who knew it was possible to be terrified at 10am in a Radisson hotel. The company should be incredibly proud. A well-deserved standing ovation. My top pick of Fringe 2024.
