Description

A story of empowerment through vulnerability. A woman facing her internalised misogyny head-on, coming out stronger on the other side. Beth hated her body and was tired of it. She decided to paint herself in the nude to face her inner demons. She liked the painting so much she put it up in an ad in the London Underground. She enjoyed telling her story so much, she took the paintings to stand-up open mics all over London. Now, she has created her first show at the Fringe that incorporates her paintings and her comedy.

Beth’s show was the highlight of my fringe experience. Hearing her story was inspiring and empowering. Anybody who is creative and who has a body should see this! Also Burt Reynolds might be there!

Beth has put together an absolutely beautiful show which I have went on to recommend to everybody. Her art is absolutely sensational and her story telling authentic, meaningful and funny. This show is interactive art exhibit meets art history lesson, meets heartfelt and funny biography. If you are looking for something that screams "Fringe" you have to see this show, if you are an art fan you have to see this show, if you are a woman you absolutely HAVE to see this show. This is the show you take your daughter to. Beth has done something beautiful in this show and you will not regret making the trip to the St Stephen's Theatre for it.

Caught the lovely Beth Knight at her Edinburgh Fringe show: 'Who told you to be small'. A beautiful, and gently comic, telling of her personal story about how introspection and self-kindness came from creating honest paintings of her face and body; and ultimately rejecting the diet of social instruction on how to look and behave that we've all been fed (and was the only thing we were permitted to eat at the turn of the millennium...). Beth's show will resonate with anyone who has reduced themselves to fit a narrative.

This show was recommended to me by a complete stranger at another show - as often happens with the Fringe. I loved the concept so decided to give it a go and I must thank that stranger for the recommendation. Who Told You To Be Small is exactly what a Fringe show should be. Part storytelling, part comedy - it's all about an artist's journey through making art that is commercial to art that feels real. Beth is also very funny and tells her story well. It is great to see the art and hear the artist's story alongside it. Don't miss this show

This was such an amazing show to watch. Seeing someone on stage become so vulnerable in front of you and yet so powerful rubs off on your in such a good way. The art is so touching and just straight up beautiful! I was the lucky one leaving with a great souvenir from the artist! You should not miss this if you get an opportunity to see her! 10/10 would/will do again!

Thought-provoking and touching show, leaving us with so much curiosity about art and body posivity but also inspired to act and make art too. Lots of laughter and some tears, a lot of new ideas and old ones brought to life with stories and shared experience. A great location for such an intimate and funny show, with the chance to spend some time with the art afterwards!

First show of the fringe 2024 and what a pick ! I'm currently on my own journey to wellness and trying to find peace with my body.
I completely resonated with Beth's struggles / dysmorphia.

Beth provides a look into her inner-world through two forms of art; painting and comedy/personal narrative. She is an incredibly talented painter and this show gives a rare insight to an artist's motivations to paint certain subjects including the most moving and personal one, herself. I loved spending this hour with her and her work.

Such a special piece!
A lighthearted and fun show where the Artists brings you through journey of self-acceptance, using her incredible Art.
The show was really poignant and had good laughs throughout! Lots of the things she said were the things I’d been thinking about the Artworld for so long but never thought to acknowledge. A great marriage of comedy, Art, and feminism.

Beth Knight’s show is great, thought provoking and funny it takes you through a journey from art college, into the tech world and then back into painting and finding her voice in the world. Totally worth it, she is really talented and her paintings are fantastic… plus there are some really comfy seats in the back row too!

What an amazing show. Beth shares her story and her art with a beautiful blend of vulnerability, strength and humour.

Beth Knight takes the audience on a captivating journey through her career as a painter. She does so with candour and without shying away from sharing how her personal experiences shaped her artworks. A show with beautiful—male gaze defying—artworks and a charismatic artist.

This show is like a live gallery-blurb, straight from the artist, and it brings something to the paintings that merely looking at them doesn’t. It’s an audience with the artist, who also happens to be articulate and thoughtful and reflective and able to talk coherently and vividly about her art, and where it came from and what she was trying to do with it.
