Description
BBC Studios, November 1991. Thora Hird, aka Captain Emily Ridley from Hallelujah, encounters Kurt Cobain ahead of Nirvana’s infamous appearance on Top of The Pops. A mutual love of coastal towns, music and family is revealed over tea and custard creams as they reflect on their individual experience of God and wonder if, at the final reckoning, Jesus will want them for sunbeams and whether happiness is ever really a choice or something predetermined for us all. ‘As an imagined piece of entertainment folklore, it’s priceless.’ (Stage). Please note that while all media gallery content is provided by verified members of the event, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society does not review or approve this content before it is posted. I just want to hug whoever came up with this concept. Bold in its originality, this is a confident but tender exploration of showbusiness, trauma and the shared humanity you find when you open up to a stranger you happen to meet in a waiting room, but that your social world would never have introduced you to. The performers share great chemistry and give a well-rounded portrayal of both Hird and Cobain. Absolutely recommend

An imagined meeting between the young American, Kurt Cobain and Northern, Brit stalwart, Thora Hird, backstage at the BBC.
Reminiscences of their early family lives give way to sage advice from an old hand to a new kid.
Kurt’s fog of pain and Thora’s mist of nostalgia provide contrasting philosophies… to live on a razor’s edge, or to snuggle up in cosy sentiment?
Kurt’s muddled world view could be eased by something from Thora the survivor.
Her silliness belies a wisdom that kept her on the straight and narrow in the show biz game. If only Kurt had met Thora, …her acceptance of love and its imperfections may have made for a better medicine.
A sweet, amusing and sometimes rueful show, with tea and custard creams… And hats off to the believable actors for making these icons ring true.

A fascinating albeit fictional insight into what might have happened if Kurt had met Thora. Poignant, funny. The two lead actors capture both the vulnerability of Kurt and the northern humour and philosophy of Thora perfectly 5 stars

A great performance from great actors playing the roles of Kurt Cobain and Thora Hird when the pair met at BBC as Nirvana were due to appear on Top Of The Pops and they instantly grew into this great bond between them as they discuss life, love and music
This show is what makes the Fringe as it's interesting, funny at times but most of all acted out perfectly
The show runs until 17th August so don't delay book today
2 great stars deserve these 5 great stars ☆☆☆☆☆

One not to miss!
A clever idea that became more and more credible.
I definitely felt that Kurt was listening more acutely than dear Thora.
Some laugh out loud one liners beautifully timed.
Well chosen actors who played their roles with assurance.

Hilariously funny and able to show the disparity between the softness of Kurt Cobain’s life he wants and the harshness of the one he has to live. Thora brings a life and joy that makes the audience laugh so much. This show is brilliant to see, especially for the custard creams
