I was told about the Weaving Me Weaving Mum by Jiayi Chen, the producer, while I was working at a different theatre venue. I couldn't have begun my day off in a better way as I marvelled at the beautiful costumes and hypnotising movement. The charm of the performance juxtaposed with the heavy, oppressive presence of the context weighed on me after I left. I'm so thankful to have gotten the chance to experience such an intimate and vulnerable show which I might otherwise have missed were it not for the invitation from Jiayi.

Putting a show on the Fringe stage requires a lot of work, far beyond what we can imagine. The producer of the show, Jiayi Chen, unveiled the background story of Weaving Me, Weaving Mom, which creates a strong emotional connection between the audience and the performers. The raw portrayal of the mother-daughter relationship, combined with the stunning fabric and costumes, is the highlight of the work. Beyond the show itself, all the invisible work and effort that everyone contributes should be equally valued. ❤️

This is the first time I’ve ever cried at a physical theatre performance. Weaving Me, Weaving Mom is a beautifully crafted show that explores the intricate relationship between mother and daughter. As someone also from an East Asian background, I resonate so much with the piece and I’m so grateful that this story is being told. Creator Yuqiu Wang truly crafted a stunning piece with stunningly beautiful materiality along with skilled dancer Jiarong Yu. I’m also very pleased to have met producer Jiayi Chen who did an amazing job bringing the show to EdFringe.

The show is just stunning. We had the pleasure of being at the same venue and getting to know the team. Congratulations to the producer Jiayi Chen for winning the Asian Art Award best production.

I met the producer, Jiayi, due to my work for AAA, where I got to interview her. Her passion for production was clear to me, and in the end, the show won best production! I really liked this show, I ended up watching it twice, I brought my mum to see it with me the second time, I felt the emotions deep inside, I cried both times I watched it. The show is the dance between a daughter and her mum, their stories cut and weaved together, a mum who wants to keep her daughter close, and a daughter who wants to create her own story. It's beautiful and it really reflects what growing up and wanting to be independent feels like. A must watch for anyone who has a troubled past with their parents, their mum in particular. Thank you for bringing this to Edinburgh fringe.

*Weaving Me, Weaving Mum* is a stunning metaphor of the mother-daughter relationship. It beautifully describes their intertwined bond with body movements, akin to strands of yarn woven together. The power dynamic is inseparable yet also striving for independence, much like the connection between an orange and its pulp. A special shoutout to producer Jiayi Chen for bringing this vision to life, and for the exceptional stage design and costumes.

What a WONDERFUL SHOW! THX to my friend Jiayi Chen--the producer of this show, with the director and all the actors gave the audience a very touching performance.

I LOVE the idea of using thread to express the connection between mother and daughter. The two conflicts in the dance were also very moving. The mother who gradually became silent and powerless hid in the corner, and the daughter who released her nature and ran freely and performed the final solo dance left a deep impression on me.

Thanks to Jiayi Chen that I got to know this show. I felt so happy and proud for her that this show could be selected to perform on the Fringe Festival through her participation and effort. I love the music and think the performance overall was amazing. However I would expect more dancing from the ‘mother’ and personally think that the daughter’s performance could be more natural. Congrats to the overall producer Jiayi Chen!

The work's mother-daughter argument is too realistic and straightforward. The result is a lack of dramatic beauty while not as tense as a real scene. The role of the mother is overly one-sided and the play would have been better if the director had tried to communicate with the mother and portrayed a more textured mother. For a first time production, the work is complete. Will be watching for your next productions ~ producer chenjiayi!

This show is really good! Beautiful dancing, great stage design and nice music all together make it a fantastic show to watch. As a Chinese, I feel sympathetic to the mum-daughter relationship that is presented in the show, and was impressed by the team too. The struggle, attachment, and love between mum and daughter are so real. I would also like to take my mum to see the show someday.

Weaving Me, Weaving Mum deftly combines textile art, physical theatre and dance to tell the desperate relationship between mother and daughter. Wool textiles create a visceral, placenta-like object that at times becomes the third performer on stage as a conduit for the mother and daughter to interact. Stage lighting is effectively used and the resulting atmosphere is moody and dramatic. As we were told at the end of the performance, by the producer Jiayi Chen, this story comes from a very real place and is a fine example of processing trauma through art.

I absolutely adored this show. It was moving from the first minute, until the very end: it explores so lovingly the mother-daughter relationship that it left me in tears. The best shows I've seen at the Fringe have left me feeling lighter and in a flow state and this performance is definitely one of my favorites. There is tenderness, there is complicity, but there is also struggle and cheekiness, punishment and return when it comes to the relationship with one's mother and the show captures all of these elements very well. The music is beautiful and the performers fantastic.

The symbolic placement of the mother on the chair anchors the daughter's performance and made me think about the movement of different generations: how the young ones roam through life in an effort to discover themselves and the world; and how older generations serve as their home, even when young ones realize this too late.

Brilliant, a must-experience!
