Description

Four women. Wasps. Cupboards made of cardboard. Wasp jokes. A kitchen that isn’t quite a kitchen. Alma, Connie, Dana, and Beth are living together in their forties, in the wake of failed marriages and career compromises, they try to look towards the next parts of their lives. It wasn’t part of the plan to find their way back to each other. In their cosily surreal house, they navigate relationships, love and the occasional run-in with doggers – but as an incessant buzzing begins to taunt them, patience wears thin and, soon, something has to break.

A heartfelt and touching story, highlighted by hilarious characterisation in Dana and Beth. Definitely one to watch!

A delight to watch, with formidable performances and deliciously witty dialogue. And the set? Gorgeous. I would love to see this as a two-act in the future because I didn't want to let these characters go! Go see what all the buzz is about, why don't you?

WOW! Possibly the most natural feeling, heartwarming thing I’ve seen at the Fringe thus far. All the actors feel perfectly cast within their roles - and the journey you take with these four women within the course of an hour is truly a joy to be a part of. Merle Fraser is truly a gift - her comedic timing is always flawless; and her talent for immersing the audience within the story, and portraying such a vast range of emotions is not to be underestimated

(Review written for Fresh Air Radio)
Wasps follows the trials and tribulations of four universities friends (or as Alma would call them; long-term co-inhabitors) who are, for better or worse, now living together again in their forties. With a brilliant opening, the audience was immediately transported to the world of Wasps. Set against a set that spoke to the cosy yet ominous atmosphere of the play, the actors did a wonderful job of making me feel just as itchy and tense as they were.
The actors did a brilliant job of delivering fabulous humour and yet also poignant messages, especially when it came to navigating loneliness, heteronormativity and motherhood. At times it felt as if there was not enough space to really flesh out the poignance of these themes, especially with the character of Connie who I’d have loved to see expanded. This meant the pace of the show felt a little rushed at points, but that has more to do with the shorter nature of the show than any fault of the production or cast itself. If anything, it left me wanting more!
A special mention has to go to the actor playing Beth whose brilliant comedic timing sometimes stole the show. From doggers to pyramid schemes, her fabulous character had the audience howling at times. I’d absolutely recommend seeing Wasps while it’s running, but if you’re like me and you’re afraid of the wee buggers, you might find yourself looking over your shoulder once or twice!

I thought it was a stunning play with a captivating cast. The set design, lighting and sound design were all perfect. I loved the characters and how they worked together. Everyone’s unique comedic styles had the right synergy for an electric premise such as this. I did think the script felt a bit unfinished, there were lots of very interesting talking points in the characters’ lives - marriage, families, careers, sexuality, money, isolation - but all felt brushed past rather quickly. There were moments it felt breathless. I would definitely recommend the play regardless because it left me wanting more!

An engrossing look at 40-something friends, beautifully portrayed by keen-eyed 20-somethings, with wit and panache. An hour of pure Fringe creativity that should not be missed.

"WASPS" is a sharp, energetic play that’s brilliantly written and expertly cast. The performances are spot-on. I particularly loved the intimate venue and the fun ‘cardboard’ set. It’s a must-see for anyone at the Fringe—thoroughly recommended!

Great show! Funny and engaging, feels like watching a bottle episode of a sitcom (encouraging)
