Description

After their success with 2023's Guilty of Love, BramwellBrand's latest musical tells the story of a woman swept away by circumstance, and the King who gave up his crown for her. Prince Edward, bored with the constraints of monarchy, falls in love with an American divorcee, Wallis Simpson, and gives up everything for her. Fans of The Crown will instantly recognise the first enactment of this royal twisted tale in the story of Wallis Simpson: but is it a love story, or is she a woman trapped by her own ambition, fuelled by the eye of the media?

This is a hidden gem. A chirpy and upbeat take on the story, but still does it justice. The glam is interspersed well with the social issues in UK and the relationship between crown and government. I thought the man playing King Edward was excellent.

What an absolute outstanding performance from all. Particularly enjoyed the very catchy telephone lyrics, great songs. A definite must see.

Out of 24 shows so far seen this Fringe, this ranks at number 1. Perfectly directed.

Proper musical theatre, set in the golden age of theatre. Catchy tunes from the period sung by beautiful voices with lively piano accompaniment. The telephone exchange made a great chorus. The supporting cast all played several roles, which were easily identified.

Wallis was perfectly cast and the lighting director had the knack of femme fatale lighting on her.

Entertaining immersive history lesson. Poor old Ernest got my sympathy.

This mid morning show would be more appropriate for an evening slot and a glamorous night out. The stage was quite cramped for the amount of action they packed in.

“Wallis”
From Jane Bramwell and Michael Brand and the company Bramwellbrand comes a new musical about the love affair that ended an English king’s reign, as told from the perspective of the American bride herself. The musical follows the journey begun when Prince Edward and Wallis Simpson meet at a joint-friend’s party and continues until the night the new King abdicates his thrown for a walk down the aisle. Included is also the perspective of the cuckolded, yet understanding husband, Ernest Simpson. “Wallis” sports catchy, often hummable tunes of the ‘30s with clever, telling lyrics sung by a cast of eight accomplished actors with impressive stage and opera backgrounds. Fast-paced, perfectly timed direction; a wide variety of costumes and hair styles matched to the upper classes of the period; and choreographed movements that recall the recent ‘20s and early ‘30s give this Fringe offering a big-stage feel and a promise of a bright future as the musical heads from Edinburgh to London.

I never would have found this without the amazing Fringe door staff. They recommended and I tried it. Absolutely FANTASTIC. Great cast, amazing pianist, and score. Superb!

Always great to see a new musical and to kick off the day with one. Does a great job of making the Dutchess of Windsor story three-dimensional for those who knew only the outline, or what they saw on "The Crown."

Well written and good tunes

Another great show from this company. Great acting, singing, everything.

Last year "Guilty of Love" was just as good. I am looking forward to seeing what they come up with next year.

A very enjoyable production. Wonderful songs, and impressively produced on a rather small stage. One could sense the possibilities on a West End stage. Highly recommended.

Well produced and performed with great music and lyrics. The lyrics cleverly tell the story of a period of history I was unaware and sent me to Wikipedia later. Great piano playing accompanies the text. clever use of a musical telephone switchboard to move the story on. It is a shame that it is a morning performance as this deserves a larger audience.

A very enjoyable show. The casting is excellent and it is very well performed. Was wondering how they could write a musical about Wallis Simpson but they did it well, and it works. Highly recommended.

I very much enjoyed this show. The story and the performance was excellent. Very well staged and loved how they took original audio recordings of the kind and overlayed with the actors dialogue. All the actors and ensemble were fantastic! Well worth seeing!

Briskly and breezily flowing along with Cowardly humour, Wallis is a powerful, political and passionate musical in the style of Evita and surely destined to be a West End - Broadway smash hit show.

Wallis the musical has had a lot of attention paid to detail at every step of its production and deserves the chance to be taken to the next level and a bigger stage with a bigger production budget.
