Description

The winner of three Tony Awards, Urinetown is a hilarious and touchingly honest musical satire of capitalism, social irresponsibility, environmental collapse, and musical theatre itself! The story centers around a Gotham-like city suffering a terrible water shortage caused by a 20-year drought that has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity's most basic needs. Amid the oppressed people, a charismatic hero plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom!

Performers did not have mics - although they did project well - and the music was sometimes a bit loud so that we couldn't always make out the dialogue. Officer Lockstock and Little Sally were particularly good, and their exposition was very helpful. The programme claimed that it was a hilarious show, which it really wasn't (there were no more than a few ripples of laughter from the audience) but we enjoyed it and thought that it was well performed, with excellent choreography and chorus work.
