Description

There are things you shouldn’t move. Especially where shipwrecks are concerned. Where people embark upon journeys with no end. Betrayed by a higher power, they follow unknown spirits observed only by the fish who have seen it all before. Perhaps this time it will be different. And then again... A first appearance at the Edinburgh Fringe from DYT Performance Company, an Associate Company of Dorchester Arts. This wonderfully inventive Dorset ensemble are the most senior acting company of DYT. Over six months, they worked with artistic director Jo Simons and playwright Ed Viney to create Triggerfish.

A clever, beautifully choreographed and acted mystery with plenty of twists and turns. The mystery at the heart of the story unfolds gradually but builds to a moving and poignant climax at the end. Catch this if you can.

Triggerfish is a powerful and charming ensemble piece. Well directed, visually stunning with good pace and strong individual characterisation, especially from the talented actors playing Mrs Fowler, "girl-playing-man" and Catherine Irons. DYT Performance Company are sure to go far with their joyful and powerful storytelling. Definitely watch this!

This is a great example of young people doing their first Fringe, with a new show and doing it right. I loved the clear mime in the opening sequence, the ensemble vibe, the expressions of individuality, the rhythm of the piece, the choreographed movement with its imaginative use of chairs and suitcases, the metaness and the smooth flow of the story. It's about a shipwreck, so the voyage of the characters is far from smooth, of course, but the panache with which the cast present it sweeps the audience along with them on the crest of their wave.

I happened upon this youth theatre group from Dorset, on Facebook, as they embarked on their Fringe journey, gave them a follow, and was so impressed by how they presented themselves and the hard work they were clearly putting into fundraising and preparation, as well as marketing their show, that I soon added it to my must-see list. I'm so glad I did, as their efforts clearly paid off, it's a lovely show and they exude joy both onstage and off.
