Description

John Harper and Joseph Ismay. Passengers on the Titanic. A church minister and an executive of the White Star Line. One a hero, one a coward. Both have a story to tell. That ill-fated crossing generated many tales of heroism and in amongst them, one or two more questionable endeavours. First-class and third-class passengers seldom came eye to eye, but as the ship slowly sunk and the panic for a lifeboat space began, these two men were cast together in a devastating drama. A must see.

Great performances, Great story. Moving. I had been in Belfast and visited the Titanic museum the week before seeing this, so knew many aspects of the story. Thoroughly enjoyed it!

Excellent. Even after over a century the sinking of the Titanic still fascinates. I knew of Ismay but had never heard of Harper or their interaction till this show. Ismay is quickly brought to life in the US Senate enquiry a few days after the disaster. It's engaging to watch on stage as the action moves through time from the enquiry, where they know what's happened, and the voyage where they don't know what's coming but we do. Harper appears and his character grows to the climax for me towards the end of the sinking. It's really brought to life that these were real people. I think the title is misleading, and in the show I think Ismay's 'cowardice' or not is unresolved. For a real story with emotional punch it's great.

Dramatically, the show is very engaging. But it irresponsibly rewrites history to make very tenuous and conservative Christian statements about class and masculinity. A real-life second class passenger is, for example, presented as a third class passenger to contrast his earthy religious manhood with the refined "cowardice" of first class passenger and White Star Line chairman Bruce Ismay.

The Titanic story has been told in many ways. This is an excellent piece of theatre built around the decisions of the White Star line and personal morals. Strong performances. Do take time to see this
