Description
A fusion of storytelling and a one-person show, keeping as close as possible to the original text. Adrian Palmer performs his own adaptation of this mysterious but inspiring story. On a stormy night, three travellers arrive at an isolated cottage. Why is the first abroad so late? What’s the trade of the second that leaves a mark on his customers? And why is the third so terrified? A unique performance of a classic piece of literature from the incomparable Thomas Hardy. 'An expressively superb Adrian Palmer, held the audience spellbound' (Southern Daily Echo). Please note that while all media gallery content is provided by verified members of the event, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society does not review or approve this content before it is posted. That was a really engaging and entertaining story, told brilliantly. Adrian had the audience completely captive while he brought the characters to life. He is a worthy successor to Mike Maran (previous chief storyteller at the Fringe), and we shall definitely return to hear him again next year.

Spellbinding storytelling at it's finest. Brings Thomas Harry's English country characters and atmosphere to life in this intriguing tale. A favorite from this Fringe.

Adrian Palmer starts the show with a quick biography of Thomas Hardy, before performing his adaption of Hardy's The Three Strangers. Although the premise of the show could not be simpler, the superb performance in the small, packed venue was enthralling, telling of three strangers taking shelter in a remote cottage on a stormy night. On reaching the surprising conclusion, there was great enthusiasm from both performer and audience. I saw this show on the spur of the moment and loved it.

I had forgotten about booking this and coming into the show had no idea what to expect. I was immediately transported to the 19th century and held spellbound by Adrian's masterful storytelling for the next hour. The story is amusing and sinister and, although I guessed the twist, I was kept guessing as to how the plot would develop. Highly recommend going along to hear this, it was one of my highlights of the Fringe.

We were transported to a shepherd’s cottage in 1824 quite effortlessly by Adrian’s wonderful storytelling. This was not a Thomas Hardy story we were familiar with but were held captivated for an enchanted hour.
Excellent! Please find time to see this gem.

Outstanding storytelling, a wonderfully atmospheric performance with minimal props and effects.
Adrian Palmer is extremely gifted.
This is my ninth play at the Fringe so far. I've enjoyed them all but I think this is my second favourite.
Truly excellent and half the price of the boring talk I went to at the Book Festival today!

Great storytelling, painting a picture of that evening at the cottage on the downs.

I have always loved this story and was really looking forward to this performance - I wasn't disappointed! Adrian was superb and in a real tour de force brought this tale to wonderful life, animating each character superbly through gesture or accent. A highlight for me was the constable reluctantly pressed into service - so funny! This is a must see for any Hardy fan and any lover of great storytelling - thank you sp much for an engrossing and entertaining hour!

An excellent presentation of Thomas Hardy's short story, well acted with atmospheric sound effects. If you don't know the story, you will be engrossed by it and its surprising conclusion. If you do, you will appreciate the wonderful solo performance.
