Description

Edging dangerously close to a TED Talk for the sheer educational thrill of it, MANDRILL is an hour of comedy about gender, history, and playing dress-up that happens to rhyme. Blending storytelling, stand-up, multi-media, poetry, and a touch of drag, Tea takes an in-depth look at the entire history of human civilization and condenses it to 55 minutes of entertainment. If you've ever wondered how we got from being apes in loincloths one day to people in Parliament freaking out about boys wearing dresses and lipstick the next, this is the show for you.

Tea presented us an expansive yet intimate sprint through a truly touching and empowering look at the history of gender, fashion, and reasons why today’s gender stereotypes are ludicrous. I can’t recommend this show enough! I laughed, I cried, I learned something, and now I want to buy heeled boots!

This absolute gem of a show will make your face hurt from laughing and take you on a witty and whip-smart roller coaster ride of ancient history, pop culture, and personal experience, all to provide perspective on how we - and our ideas about gender - came to be this way. Tea is an incredible performer, not to be missed!

One hour of queer history (more so gender presentation) told with wit and in rhyme?! MIND-BLOWING. Hilarious, engaging and informative throughout. Do yourself a favour and catch this brilliant late-night comedy!

Hilarious - a great concept, very inventive, and goes in surprising directions! I learned a lot about the history of gender, and I thought the audience participation was used very effectively.

Fun, informative show about how “feminine” fashion trends used to be more masculine and vice versa! A great queer how to guide on how gender is a fluid concept!

I loved getting to catch this show. I knew vaguely it would be about queer identity and the history of fashion but it was so funny! The jokes come fast and frequent and in rhyme which is a feat that tickles the brain!

Can't recommend this show enough. It's so fun and different from so many things here!

I am beyond thrilled I got to catch this show! Mandrill was surprising- I knew what I was in for, had watched some clips, knew I was going to laugh. Then suddenly the show starts and it’s in rhyme, there’s improv, I’m tearing up, my face hurts from laughing, and I know about 80% more queer history than I had known before. Tea is a brilliant performer and remains witty and energetic throughout the show. Definitely do not miss!

Mandrill is a wholly unique display of queer history, Shakespearean wordplay, whipsmart wit, and warm humanity. It's impressive to watch Tea crack joke after joke while managing to keep rhyme, weaving an affecting emotion throughout that will sit with you long after you've left the venue. Treat yourself to this exceptional performance!

So refreshing to see such a smart, funny show that rhymes in a way that is almost understated. I learned a lot and am still thinking about how brilliantly Tea walked us through the fickle world of who gets to wear wigs and makeup. A must not miss!!!
