Description

A traveller arrives at a border with a stack of battered cases. From within them, whole worlds will emerge... Suitcase Show is an eclectic boxset of short stories. Dark, spiky, and comic, each one is told out of a suitcase. The staging is inventive, from lo-fi shadowplay to wireless projection, from dancing disembodied hands to narratives that crackle from a 70s stereo suitcase. Trick of the Light is an award-winning company from Aotearoa / New Zealand renowned for crafting inventive shows with engaging narratives. Past work includes The Road That Wasn't There, Tröll, and The Bookbinder.

Whilst some of the tales are slightly underwritten, the staging, lighting and central performance will blow you away. A hugel imaginative staging that is unlike anything else I’ve seen. The best show I saw at Summerhall this year.

Suitcase Show is exactly the magical gem you want to find at the Fringe - clever and creative, straddling genres with so much imagination and care. Moving, amusing with a wickedly dark edge. Five stars for sure . *****

Absolutely magnificent. Was spellbound by every one of the stories that emerged from the suitcases - as well as the framework narrative. Touching, funny and very cleverly performed.

Fantastic set with loads of well thought out details. Greatly rehearsed and timed performance and memorable storytelling.
The space is well used and creatively extended by the use of a screen.
Very entertaining, a true gem this summer.

The opening short story immediately got us spellbound, but then it dropped off with the next three stories which we found rather slow-moving and repetitive. Fortunately, it ended on a high note with a chilling tale. The setting is truly unique and I think it has great potential to polish a few of the stories.

Rating:
- 5/5, Opening, 1st and final story.
- 3/5 2nd, 3rd and 4th stories.

I enjoyed the puppetry and animation. I appreciated the way that the human dimension danced with the inanimate to create joy.

These are deliciously dark campfire tales and bedtime stories ingeniously and inventively told with humour, meticulous craft and a mischievous glint in the eye of the storyteller.
