Description

A brand-new miniature opera exploring deforestation through scenes from five ancient stories that centre on what happens when you mess with trees. These stories alternate with conversations between two users of an internet forum on an overnight work binge, until gradually the two worlds begin to merge. A journey through humour, anger and ultimately hope, STUMPED is ideally suited to both existing opera fans and newbies. Performed by a stellar cast and ending with a short reflection from an invited forest expert. Part of MadeInScotlandShowcase.com

Our first (mini) opera in English! Well done! It's an interesting message and the vocal performance was excellent. However, as opera newbies, we did find the songs monotonous and dull :-( As someone new to opera, this would be a 3/5 though i am sure opera fans would rate it higher as the vocals were faultless.

Stumped makes a strong point through its intriguing musical storytelling: hurting the forest is hurting ourselves, and if you can’t feel it, let’s feel it together, right here, right now.

I went out into the Edinburgh evening with a bit more hope in my heart, and a great appreciation of one of the many offerings from the Made In Scotland Showcase in this year’s Fringe.

"meta moments don’t just add a bit of humour, they also urge us to think more deeply about the place of art in exploring human understandings of deforestation. Each myth (or mythical extract) that is shared in STUMPED shines a different light on this understanding, often highlighting human connections historically with individual tree species."

We have all been there: We search for something online, find something curious, something that piques our interested. We follow it up with another search and another and before we know it we have entered an internet rabbit warren. Maybe the only thing that makes us stop is the sun raising on the next day. This opera is the story of such a night.
