Description

Spring Awakening weaves poignant storytelling with a dynamic rock score. Selkie Theatre Companies production follows a group of adolescents as they navigate the transition to adulthood, and deal with the consequences of their own ignorance. These consequences clash with youthful rebellion and oppressive societal norms. Though the dialogue was written over a century ago, the themes remain relevant to this day. From emotional ballads, to energetic and rebellious anthems, the score effortlessly combines pop/rock music with poetic and haunting lyrics. The modern styles fused with a 19th-century setting and dialogue make this musical truly unique.

oh my god. i cant even put it into words how much i loved this production. OH MY GOD!!!!! everyone was absolutely AMAZING! ive wanted to see spring awakening more than anything for so long now (little bit of a megafan) and ive been so excited for this performance, this is the type of performace i should be seeing on broadway or in the west end. the cast, band and tech went BEYOND anything i could ask for. the choreo, vocals and costuming were brilliant. ive never felt so connected to my favourite characters (shamelessly, moritz and melchior. i would give a liver to play moritz) before, this was such an amazing experience. pretty sure i was caught lipsyncing a couple times haha. i was absolutely stunned to see young wendla’s dancing, she was *so* brilliant and she added so so much to the full show. moritz’s performance was absolutely amazing, and i was so happy to see him in the dark i know well. whoever suggested that, and all the other little details that really pulled the show together, thank you. it may seem silly coming from a random fan of the show, but you all have made this show mean more to me than i ever thought it could. i was front and center of the theater, and i could NOT have been more glad to see this impossibly good cast from such a good angle. cannot wait to see what you guys do next! massive applaude to all of you!!!!!

This in my opinion is definitely a fringe show that belongs on broadway, it was perfect. Shannon Hood who played Wendla did a fantastic job with her angelic vocals and out of this world acting skills, I especially enjoyed her ‘Mama who bore me’. Joe Gill who played Melchior also did an amazing job making us as an audience laugh, particularly during ‘Totally Fucked’ which was my favoruite song and also cry during “Those You’ve Known”. I guarantee both actors will be on broadway within the next ten years. As for the rest of the incredibly talented cast they were just perfect, and made this show awesome. Woooo

What. A. Show. I saw this production twice during its too short run and I was blown away both times. The individual performances were captivating and as an ensemble the work and care put into every second was palpable. As requested, to boost fellow actors egos, you guys were incredible and it was an absolute pleasure to watch. Congratulations on an incredible performance ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This is something special. Hard hitting at times but the acting and voices are just superb. Tricky subjects tackled with true skill. Special mention to Joe Gill-what a voice

It’s great to see a new theatre company around and this ticket is worth every pound

The actors are very talented and prepared the material well. The music was rehearsed with much detail, I really enjoyed this part of the production—the songs involving everyone were particularly enjoyable and the MD never missed a beat. The solo piano playing in songs such as Whispering was simply stunning. I loved the rest of the band as well and the guitar created amazing pop/rock colours that elevated everyone’s singing

However, I found the direction often rather confusing ... Together with many cuts (too many?!), the evening felt very rushed not having enough time to meditate on themes that are heavy and almost every spoken scene missed any deeper layers. It seems the creative team doesn’t trust the source material which begs the question—why perform the musical at all if not as written? Plus, are we really cutting the material of the only queer characters in the show in 2024? This choice seems baffling as these are also the only moments that provide some comedic relief in this otherwise dark script

That being said, the director did manage to create some very nice moments—I only wish they were more consistently present and followed what the original asks for. Shoutout to the actors portraying Wendla, Ilse, Melchior and Moritz

Well done everyone involved and I can’t wait to see what this company does next

Spectacular!!! 2nd time seeing Selkie Theatre Co.’s Spring Awakening this week and definitely not alone in my love of this production, going by the audience’s standing ovation -and well deserved! Some darker themes covered within the characters’ stories however these are portrayed with sensitivity and grace by this highly talented young cast. A show that will skilfully take you on an emotional roller coaster from beginning to end. Great energy from all the performers. Beautifully moving vocals with top class harmonies accompanied by the skilful live band. A remarkable experience. My GEM of the fringe 2024 and tickets already bought for a 3rd performance. NOT one to miss out on.

My favourite show but I saw this last year by a group that had 5 star reviews throughout with faultless performances

Think this was a high bar for a new group

Some good voices with potential to take them further

Good luck

5/5 stars from me! Saw this show last night at it was amazing! If you’re looking for an extremely talented cast performing in a funny, upsetting, human and emotional musical this show is for you. A shoutout is definitely in order for the leading roles played by Shannon Hood, Joe Gill and Daniel Fischer with extremely professional and talented voices and bringing great vulnerability in their acting making Spring Awakening such a compelling and powerful show. Along with the cast, lighting, costume and music were also excellent. This is a must see in the fringe this year and I would 100% recommend going to see this talented group. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

wow wow WOW I loved seeing this show. Such a great cast who work together to make this musical. You can truly see that they have all been working hard for this and the good relationships they have with each other on stage, which can be a difficult thing to do. This show has some difficult topics but this group of actors were very professional and truly let the emotions run wild. The live band led by an amazing musical director was always on time and worked beautifully together, which you might not often find in fringe shows. I was laughing, crying, gasping and ultimately moved by the show. If you want a good watch in the fringe go see this show ! Why are you still reading this, get tickets !?

The young cast bring such a raw, heartbreaking vulnerability to their roles - particularly the three leads.

The effort that has went into this production cannot be overstated and more people need to see it for themselves.

Absolutely brilliant, going into it I had absolutely no idea what this musical was about but knew some of the cast members and decided to come along and be amazed and I was.

You can tell the cast have spend so much time of their performance as they make you laugh cry and feel the need to evert your eyes all at the same time. Most of the technical issues from previous nights have been fixed, but it's theatre! nothings perfect. But this is close. 10/10 would reccomend.
well done to you all because you smashed it guys.

Becca and JP 62 days ago

Really really talented cast - particular stand outs were Melchior and Moritz!

You can tell the cast have worked really hard to put this together, and we loved the intimacy between the audience, cast and band, it really helped to carry the story along. Also the MD has smashed it with those slick harmonies!!

Well done to everyone on stage and off, should be very proud :)

We attended the first preview and tonight’s performance and we’re happy to report almost all technical difficulties are gone now. What an amazing production of this musical that approaches the material in a new way. We really enjoyed all the performances and the main trio of protagonists are stars. The band of three sounds in my opinion better than anything else you will witness this year—we particularly loved the piano solos and rock songs in the score … TERRIFIC!
Well deserved standing ovations tonight ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I had only heard about this musical from a couple of musical-nerd-friends, and I'm very happy I got to see it at the Fringe. The cast is very young and there have been some technical issues the first night, so it's not Broadway, but it was a wonderful experience: the musical itself is really something else, and the performers are legit!

Ciara M 62 days ago

Really really enjoyed this show. Will definitely be back. I’m seeing a lot of reviews that are about technical difficulties/mics, from what I can see on the fringe website the first two nights were previews. This is bound to happen. I seen the first proper performance last night and I must say I was extremely impressed. The two main characters really had the audience in the palm of their hands. Do not let these reviews steer you away from visiting this talented cast, they will not let you down. Well done!

As a big fan of Spring Awakening I was curious how they will do this show in an hour and 30 minutes.
It was great that they had a band but disappointed that the performers had no mikes. It was hard to hear the singing sometimes even though I was in the first row. So I assume that it's even worse on the sides.
Due to time limits certain scenes were rushed and some songs left out which I greatly missed but overall they managed to capture the essence of the show.
Great acting and some amazing singing. Moritz and Melchior are real power houses.
But the rest of the cast are also very talented.
A captivating show that should be on your watchlist.

Attended this show tonight with friends and we laughed and cried during every other scene. I really liked the ensemble because everyone seemed very involved even if they had a small part only. And what a treat to see this performed with a live band. We’ll be back again.

Tonight I had the pleasure of watching this show. As someone who has a deep love for Spring Awakening I can wholeheartedly say that this production did what it needed to do and more. Tonight was its first performance after having two previews, there was some teething issues yes - however the actors on stage didn’t allow it to take away from the depth of their performances. A special well done to the young actors playing Melchior and Wendla. Followed by the actors playing Moritz and Ilse. The cast worked well together as a cohort to deliver the sensitive nature of the show. Very inspiring.

Spring Awakening was fantastic. My daughter was the expert on this show, even came prepared wearing her t shirt. I had no clue about the storyline. For those who have overly critiqued this show, you’ve got it so wrong. As a ‘virgin’ to its content, I commend every single performer. Those young people took on a challenge of some very serious, tear jerking, issues and delivered with commitment, enthusiasm, energy. Okay, sound wasn’t great but, hey £10 a ticket, keep it real. Hold your heads high, you performed very raw material, on a floor with audience inches away from you. Take a huge bow

Claire 63 days ago

Absolutely amazing show 100% seeing again before its end. The tech issues were only a minor setback and the acting and musicality of the entire ensemble truly shined. Wendla, Milchior, and Mortiz are amazing performers who truly developed the story and made it their own. Definitely a must-see this Fringe!

H.M 63 days ago

It’s clear that many actors on stage have capable singing voices but much dialogue and story was lost with poor projection and non committal acting in the dialogue scenes. The two eldest male and female characters stood out and they acted well and strong. The direction leaves much to be desired with what feels like under rehearsed movement, scene changes and no clear character choices, motives or arcs for the audience to get behind. Not to mention the plagues of tech issues that resulted in dark stages with people non lit as well as fully lit scene change overs… The music itself had potential, but it felt empty, exposed and rather samey.
The story itself is convoluted and I’m left not connecting to anything or anyone. The topics of this show are serious and deserve care and consideration which it doesn’t feel they were shown. It didn’t feel like this show was fringe ready and needed much work to answer to the task which unfortunately I feel they didn’t manage to achieve.

A really good production … it feels shorter than the original (a good thing). The singing was awesome and the pianist was such a vibe. 10/10

Fantastic adaptation, really enjoyed the staging and only had a few gripes with the direction - overally really recommend this gripping musical with really imprtant themes

DH 64 days ago

Loved it!! I didn’t know anyone from the cast but was blown away by all of the principals as well as the supporting cast who put in a lot of energy in both acting and singing. The direction was clear and creative … My favourite part was music/the band. Some of the songs sound completely different compared to how they’re usually done and that was very cool and refreshing!! Blue Wind, Don’t Do Sadness & the final trio were the highlights for me.

Jackie Robinson 64 days ago

Saw this show last night and absolutely loved it! Fantastic cast with great musical ability, guided by an awesome MD. The Director dealt with the more adult aspects of the show in a tasteful manner. Well done to all - will definitely go again before the run ends on the 10th. Grab a ticket while you can!
