Description

Thumbing through a record collection, having a glass of wine, remembering the old times. There’s nothing better than catching up with old friends. As Milo invites his two friends Davie and Liane around for dinner to meet his new girlfriend, it promises to be a great night reconnecting after being apart. But she’s just SO YOUNG! Douglas Maxwell’s So Young sees an innocuous evening slide into ruin as old friends face the challenges of middle age, growing apart and losing those close to them.

Across the Arts (4/5 stars) 48 days ago

While the living room setting of So Young is familiar from Pinter to Yazmina Reza’s God of Carnage, Maxwell keeps it fresh and contemporary, with observations as sharp as Liane’s tongue.

Perfectly-constructed one-act drama, the dialogue is fast, cheeky, frank, brilliantly observant, and often lethally funny

Three Weeks (4/5 stars) 56 days ago

It’s an insightful examination of differing responses to grief and the death of a loved one. It is insightful, too, on ageing and generational difference. This crackerjack of a play is also a reminder that theatre is crucially a literary form.

Laugh-out-loud hilarity is what happens. Raw, emotional drama is what happens.

The play is powerfully performed by a terrific cast and is a sharply written both extremely witty and tender look at the nature of memory and friendship, questioning whether we can know how people feel and who gets to say who loves who.
