Description

September 11, 1973. A US-backed coup led by General Augusto Pinochet will oust Chile’s democratically-elected president. Allende died by suicide in the palace that day. The play focuses on the final hours of Salvador Allende’s life. Pinochet is hell-bent on ousting Allende and eliminating his supporters. The chips are down and there is no time to spare. As Allende anxiously considers his options, he’s challenged by a mysterious man to play the final chess game of his life. A compelling, relentless and daring play, freely based on facts.

Eloquent, smooth, and well-produced. This piece rose above the space it had been provided for a wonderful, thoughtful, look at a very intimate human moment. Among all the fast-paced, visually-stimulating comedy shows at Fringe, sitting in a psychological drama that manages to hold interest for over an hour is a breath of fresh air. Great work all around!

I'm from Chile but I've lived in Edinburgh a while now, and I thought it was interesting to see a play talking about Allende in English, so I decided to go on the last day (not a big fan of big Fringe crowds).
I was not disappointed.
The script was amazing and I appreciated the intention of pronouncing Spanish proper names as close as possible to the language. It was a very interesting imaginary discussion between Allende and a "devil's advocate" (?) which takes us through the hero's idealized figure as well as some of his shadows. It had witty jokes (although people mostly didn't laugh, maybe they were self-conscious of the drama? I chuckled but got a disapproving head turn from someone), it had plenty of drama and an excellent interwoven script where discussion seemingly mixes with historical facts.
The actors were amazing, I loved them both but I was especially taken by the strong voice of Allende's actor, who made the room tremble with it. I know this is their job, but it is still admirable how actors can memorize 1 hour long scripts.
All in all, as a Chilean I appreciate seeing this and I hope they have the chance to show it everywhere. It made reflect and made me want to read and know more about multiple things and I was proud to see an important historical figure (and a fundamental historical point) of my country represented and valued like this. Thank you!

Beautiful, thoughtful and memorable show concerning the demise of the Chilean president in the awful days before and on the 11th September 1973.

Not just a historical show about the events but really a look into the mind of Allende on that fateful day.

Small theatre and a small band of actors and other workers - how the Fringe should be.

Don't miss it- it is next to the Hub so easy to get to if you are going to the Tattoo.

Thank so much for this great piece of theatre,

I have a fringe rule of thumb, "avoid shows about niche historic people, they tend to be terrible passion projects". I broke my rule to see this, and was pleasantly surprised by some really good acting and a lavish set. Worth a look.

Watched this yesterday and found the story about the last hours of the elected Chilean Govt. between Salvador Allende and Doctor D (Death?) compelling.
Know very little about what and why the coup happened, however after watching this very well acted piece plan to read in more detail about that year in Chilean politics.

Dan Owen is superb as Allende, his clear, resonant voice expressing the power and charisma of the man ... a fantastic production, a fascinating play and two excellent performances.
