Description
From the creator of Roots (Fringe 2019) and cast member of the hit 2022 Edinburgh Fringe Bradán Theatre show My Lover Was A Salmon in the Climate Apocalypse, comes a bewitching new solo folk storytelling performance. Join Elisabeth Flett as she gives the audience a decidedly sapphic retelling of the Selkie tale – that is, she’ll try to if her own story would only stop getting in the way. A tour de force of Flett’s award-winning career as a folk musician, folklorist, writer and theatre-maker.Please note that while all media gallery content is provided by verified members of the event, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society does not review or approve this content before it is posted. The Selkie’s Wife is incredibly pensive, moving and hopeful. As a queer lover of folk tales, I found it very reaffirming to hear that others, too, get angry or mournful to not have our stories told. Essa Flett starts changing that! She is an amazing storyteller and singer whose performance reinterprets and rewrites tales and allows us to see things from a different perspective. The show is a triumph in matters of intersectionality, be it queer selkies, forgotten women’s stories or reconsiderations of what disabled bodies mean. The show is a must-see for everyone!

I wrote this review earlier but it’s not showing so I’m keen to say I loved this show - Essa Flett is a very talented writer, composer and performer- very powerful portrayal of current issues and from a most diverse perspective- I was spellbound in the depths of her folklore tales of Selkie life and human lores! Thank you

This show is full of wonderful writing, beautiful music and a huge amount of knowledge. Our group included people with no knowledge of or interest in selkies, but who came out thrilled we'd seen the show - you don't need to be an expert to enjoy the stories Flett weaves.
Highly recommend for anyone interested in folklore, or just looking for different queer stories this fringe.

Flett’s narrative abilities had me rapt in this retelling of the Selkie’s tale. The music was especially moving and reminiscent of traditional storytelling practices. I recommend this to anyone who appreciates a current take on classic folklore.

We really loved this show. Flett tells stories with passion and acuity, drawing us into the world of her folk tales seamlessly with music and spoken word. This show is heartfelt, earnest, and unique. A touching must-see for fans of queer rage, seals, and/or crying three times in 50 minutes.
