Description

Mike and his van work odd hours for irregular contracts; Joyce has given up her profession for a home. Enter Wilson, a cocky young man seeking help in exacting a violent and idiosyncratic revenge. Joe Orton was known for his scandalous black comedies and in this, one of his earliest plays, the themes of sex, violence and death are shown playing themselves out in the everyday lives of Mike and Joyce and in Wilson, whose love for and loss of the man he calls his brother provides the catalyst for the disruption that unfolds.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I write on behalf of my late sister-in-law (Mrs Edna Welthorpe ) to express our shock and disgust that a vehicle demonstrating the degenerate behaviour common among murderers, hustlers, and 'ladies' of the night, whether ex or not, should be permitted to sully our stage. In these days of enlightened thinking, Mr Orton's want of either probity or rectitude constitutes a willful assault on the moral pillars of our society, leaving them open to undeserving mockery and ridicule. An example of the feeble-minded attitude this encourages can be seen the review provided by G SHORTFALL, redolent as it is of smirky, dirty smut. One wishes for the return of the censorship of the Lord Chancellor to protect the right-thinking majority from having to make itself known and exercise its democratic right to complain.

Still a funny and macabre play, but amateurish production.

It's a good show! A great little set and venue, and the sort of dramatics that you'll remember and want to tell people about. If you're asked about the most interesting thing you saw at the festival you could do a lot worse than an Orton Revival where every one of the many laughs was a little bit uneasy. Black comedy. Charmingly performed, with a couple of big laughs on account of the absurd embellishments you can make when you adapt a radio play to a visual medium. I had a great time.
