Description

Reinvigorate your musical soul with classic jazz piano including Joplin’s The Entertainer, Brubeck’s Take Five and Gershwin’s iconic showstopper Rhapsody in Blue – by enchanting candlelight. Award-winning pianist Matthew Shiel takes us on a whirlwind tour of a century of jazz and has the audience living for those infectious toe-tapping swing rhythms! Programme also includes Joplin’s Maple-Leaf Rag, Dave Brubeck’s Unsquared Dance and piano pieces by jazz icons Fats Waller and Oscar Peterson. 'Matthew Shiel shone' (ThisWeekCulture.com).

I found the ragtime somewhat sentimentalised, with a sense of rubato and unwanted romanticism. Entertainer seemed to be ABRSM g3 edition? Beyond this I enjoyed his playing, more so than the narrative.
