Description

Mary Stuart and Elizabeth I return as undead, washed-up drag queens when a powerful force opens the gates to the present. Together with Penthesilea and Valkyrie, they have lived in limbo for centuries, ruling over various sub- and parallel worlds. As they grapple with their shared history and enduring patriarchal power structures, the idea of a joint rule emerges. Moving between opera, drag and drama, Anne Welenc's directorial debut QUEENS plays with historical and pop cultural legacies in a bold and provocative exploration of gender, power and identity. For fans of dramatic queens, drag and absurd-comic musical theatre.

QUEENS is a very original and entertaining show that reconfigures the 'rules' of theatre.' I must say the costumes and make-up are something else! It is a multilayered, theatrical drag-race but also personal meeting between Elisabeth I and Mary Queen of Scots, watching us from another dimension. The Berlin based actors have great singing voices and a flavoured chemistry together. Just surrender to the Berlin vibe and authentic direction this show is taking!

QUEENS encapsulates Berlin LGBTQI+ culture, with the crudeness of a drag show, meeting punk and thoughtful commentary on patriarchy, history and popular culture. A brilliant show

" the costumes and makeup are excellent. The actors sing well – fortunately as it is billed as an opera of sorts."
