Description

DEATH. It's coming for us all, so why don't we talk about it? Well, OIive is bloody well going to. Via an earth-shattering piece of serious journalism that'll be her ticket off the entertainment desk and into a Pulitzer Prize. But when Olive starts recruiting dying people to interview for her hot take on mortality... the last thing she expects is to become one of them. Based on real events, OUTPATIENT is the first solo show from Harriet Madeley: an interrogation of invincibility that will make you laugh... and so live longer.

A very funny, powerful, and moving show set in the magnificent anatomy lecture theatre dealing with the fragility of life. Harriet Madeley's honesty, authenticity, and tight script had me enthralled. Five stars.

Absolutely wonderful show, brilliantly acted on the powerful emotive topic of death. This just blew me away! So personal and so moving!

Death and Taxes - the only certainties in life!
Brilliant ending, loved the simple staging and very powerful to be exploring the impending impact of death in an Anatomical Theatre.
Recommend that you get your ticket whilst you can.

Totally engaging throughout. Brilliantly acted with warmth, humour and humility which carries the audience through the story and the messages for us all.

#edfringe show 5: @Crowded__Room has @harrietmadeley_ as an #Outpatient. A wonderful show about the prospect of death and what it does to us. Touching, funny, a little bit alienating (by design), and definitely worth getting up and busting it to Summerhall early for.

Seen on 10th August.

A captivating hour on death…and also love…crafted and performed with great skill by Harriet Madely. In some ways a partner to ‘The Long Run’. See them both!

The woman who handed us the flyer said "It's a show about death and dying. But for a show about death and dying, it's weirdly upbeat".

She was right. I'm so glad that I found that description tempting, I would have missed out on something very special if I hadn't.

Powerfully moving storytelling, beautifully delivered. A very compelling package.

Beautifully constructed and executed. One of the most memorable performances I’ve seen in the past 8 years at the fringe.

Like Harriet says in the phone convo intro reminiscent of a hip-hop track, "It's about death and it's first thing in the morning so I want it to be upbeat". It is all of those things. This is a solo show about a woman navigating a major event with voiceover convos and cheeky asides but despite that seasoned format this sprint-not-a-marathon show stays fresh from start to finish. I was especially fond of a trope turned on its side during a conversation with a hospital administrator (I don't want to spoil it but iykyk). An glorious story about how our lives affect the people nearest us, even when we think it's ending and with that a poignant reminder that no one dies alone.

Brilliant and moving show exploring the ultimate topic of death and managing to do so with a compelling story mixing laughter and tears with a bit of science and tremendous feeling. At the heart of it is an astonishing, remarkably first solo performance by Harriet Madeley with essentially just a single running machine prop in the atmospheric and suitably appropriate setting of the Anatomy Theatre.

This is a quite brilliant show by an exceptional performer.
Like other reviewers this blew us away.
A surprising mixture of the NHS, how journalists work and the London Marathon!!
A moving story, very well told and beautifully put together and I guarantee it will make you think about a lot of very important and emotional issues. Don't miss - it is quite inspirational!
I cannot recommend it highly enough!

It's hard for me to put my feelings about "Outpaitent" into words, but I'm going to try. This play simply blew me away. It was life affirming and startling. It made me see my world in a better light. And we all know that if we change the way we look at things, the things we look at change.

"Outpatient" changed the way I looked at things. I can honestly say that seeing this play has made my life better.

This piece was a mix of humor, sadness, devestation and ultimate joy.

This is a must see performance!

A brilliant show. Beautifully written, performed with heart and a touching story through a through. I hope this show goes further, it deserves a long life and a plenty audience. 5* through and through bringing so much thought and many tears

We absolutely loved this. I knew nothing about it but had sone time so all rather last minute. I found it totally absorbing and with minimal props we were taken to many different scenes. So clever and entertaining. Would love this to be a tv drama.

A strong piece of theatre which tackles some difficult issues in a very engaging way. Best use of a running machine this Fringe! Good to get people thinking about and talking about DEATH!

This show left me speechless. Powerful performance and masterful directing - you don't know you've fallen under their spell until you notice you're being swept inexorably along by a tide of emotion as you find yourself not quite sure how to feel about this woman standing in front of you... But you just can't look away.

Stunning piece of theatre, highly recommend you see this.

We absolutely loved this show - the pace, energy, and heart 'Olive' gave to the audience was everything you look for with a solo show. The content was explored in a nuanced, funny and sensitive way and gave just as much drama as humour. All in all, a must-see (particularly for anyone grieving) - best of luck for the rest of the run!

"the physicality, energy and verve of the performance impresses, as does the moral conundrum of how to behave when time seems to be running out."

Madeley’s performance is a delight and the standing ovation she receives at the play’s conclusion is proof that I’m not the only person in the audience with that view.
