Description

A heart-warming, poignant and, at times funny play about palliative nurse and ex-singer/songwriter Bronwyn, who is commissioned by her patient (Henry) to write an album of music based on secret poems he had written for his late wife and son (Justin) – words he couldn’t say in person. A premiere from writer and award-winning composer Jon Lawrence, it is based on his own experience and proves that love and life can exist in the strangest places. With brand-new acoustic music, it will have you laughing, crying and singing. A must see!

What an absolute rollercoaster of a show...it has everything, jokes, tears, music, drama....a fantastic piece of writing bought to life by some amazing actors (and the guitarist in the corner..)
Loved it...

I'm staring at my keyboard wondering how I can put what I felt into words. "Magical experience" doesn't begin to describe it, but I suppose I'll go with that. The actors did a stellar job, the music was fantastic, and the overall plot had me biting my tongue to avoid sobbing too loud. That being said, plenty of laughs peppered into the play that make it hit all the more harder. The dialogues are deep without being cheesy, every character makes you fall in love with them, and every turn in the story makes you think harder, feel deeper. I missed my afternoon classes for this, and honestly? Worth it. Worth it and then some. I'd go again if could.

Brilliant show with a fantastic collaborative cast who painted a vivid picture for us about how all the staff in a hospice make the experience a calm and caring one at a very difficult time for families. A tough theme but written with emotional intelligence that can reach anyone in the audience. The music added so much as it linked the themes in the show and added a gentle atmosphere around the characters. A must see - catch it before it ends the run. Amazing . ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A wonderful show! Music throughout was lovely. Cast were fantastic, such well developed characters in such a short amount of time. The ginger nurse has a gorgeous singing voice. Really enjoyed it. Bring some tissues!

A beautiful tale that perfectly captures the emotions that one goes through when losing a parent, told sensitively and thoughtfully. The writing was heartfelt and the casting perfectly captured the essence of it with humour and emotion.
Take your tissues and be prepared to laugh and cry and feel all warm inside too. There IS a good way to die. A perfect production.

Prepare to be swept away by this emotional journey that strikes the perfect balance between love, death, humor, empathy and more incredible emotions….A great story line that will keep you hooked until the very end… Just wow!
Btw - Grab your tissue, must be needed…
Thanks to all actors and every one who made it happen… ;) x

Took my daughter to see this on Sunday and it was utterly brilliant. Emotional funny and bittersweet, left in tears. The acting, the story, the music was all superb! This play should be made into a film - Netflix I hope your reading these reviews!

This was a breathtaking show that didn’t shy away from hard topics without over-romanticising death - it had me in tears as a healthcare professional, as it so beautifully reflected the reality of dying and the conversations around it. By far my favourite show so far in Edinburgh and would recommend to anyone! Congratulations to the writer and the talented cast.

Wow, just…WOW. What an incredibly moving show. A very difficult subject but dealt with so delicately and honestly with lovely little moments of humour to help make it not too heavy. All actors were brilliant but I must give a shout-out to Anne who plays Bronwyn - what a beautiful voice and some really touching moments acted with such emotion. Fantastically written and directed too. Well done all!

One Sugar Stirred to the Left is an emotional rollercoaster that explores themes of love, loss, and the complexities of human relationships, with plenty of fun and light-hearted moments that keep the tone balanced. Each actor delivered their best performance by fully embodying their characters and delivering lines with utmost sincerity. The music also deserves special mention; it was an integral part of the storytelling and elevated the entire show.In short, One Sugar Stirred to the Left is a must-watch at the Fringe.

I had a lump in my throat at the end of this beautiful little production. A show that reminds us that life is short. Communication and opening up to your loved ones is essential during our limited time in life. Please see it. Afterwards, call your family and tell them you love them.

So good we saw it twice!
A fabulous new play with laughter, tears, songs and some great acting.
A must see - which we did twice!
If you just watch one play at the Fringe, then this should be it.

The storyline, for me was pretty bland, it was very one dimensional throughout. I've seen this type of topic time, and again being written about, and it was nothing out of the ordinary, for me anyway, it needed some work on the development of the storyline to make it less predictable. The only saving grace was the cast, the way in which it came together, a bit of humour injected, which made it palatable. It was all very well acted, the singing perfect, couldn't quite work out why there was a random man on a guitar, when it could of been less distracting focusing on the main characters songs. Felt unnecessary.

Absolutely loved this little gem. Had everything, comedy, great acting, good plot and even a little singing!
Highly recommend

Liked the storyline, enjoyed the way it was delivered on stage by all members of cast. They forged their characters to look real and authentic, not easy with such raw emotion. I enjoyed how it was structured for audiences to feel engaged throughout. The portrayal of this story on the stage was executed brilliantly. There are many plays floating around that cover similar topics, but for this particular play it really was well thought out for stage.

Loved this fantastic short play about love, mainly. There were great performances, and lots of laughter and tears. A standout amongst the cacophony of shows competing for audiences at the Fringe. This one deserves a full house every day.

I saw this a few days ago. It definitely focuses on issues we try to avoid in public. It moved me alot, especially with health issues in the family. I do, however, felt it needed more depth in the actual content for some of the characters themselves. I think other characters should of had more musical content to add layers and compliment Bronwyn's singing parts, as it opened itself up to being a musical by adding this in. Apart from that a stella performance and superb directing!!

This is what a “good death” is like. Hospices are amazing places. And yes, there is laughter as well as tears. Go and see this, then donate to your local hospice. All the cast were excellent…but the most important? The tea lady, of course!

Sarah Chalke 32 days ago

Oh my goodness! What a perfect hour exploring a range of relationships, love, loss and hope all accompanied by the most beautiful music, sung incredibly by 'Bronwyn' and accompanied intricately by Jon.
The story was hopeful, and showed the complexities of death in a truly sensitive way, with fun and hilarity woven throughout.
We laughed, cried and everything in-between, and the cast, who were available for pics and chats afterwards, were so friendly.
You cannot miss this show if you're visiting Edinburgh during its run, it's messaging is incredibly uplifting and insightful.

Moving and insightful exploration of the end of life journey from a range of perspectives. Lovely musical overlay to the story.

One sugar stirred to the left is a very poignant portrayal of death, our final journey. Wasn't a dry eye in the house. Nurse Bronwyn's renditions accompanied by music from Jon Lawrence were moving. Entire cast were terrific and sensitive in their portrayal of a difficult subject. Much thanks to Susan who invited us to the show, just when we were thinking about what to watch next. Must see!

Alan Hendry 33 days ago

An excellent, thoughtful show, highlighting the value of relationships. Very sensitively handled by a great cast, definitely one to go see and a beautiful musical accompaniment. A highlight of the Festival for me.

A really gorgeous wee treat. As someone who has gone through something very similar- it was a beautifully done show with a really lovely take on death and grief. The performances were lovely. Stand out performance was Nurse Bronwyn with her stunning voice. The performances of the 2 older gentleman too were really lovely to watch. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A very poignant and moving piece on love, death and memory. Beautifully played by an outstanding cast, this is a wonderfully moving, affecting and often humourous piece of theatre.

Five stars! A poignant and funny celebration of life and death. Beautifully acted and conceived. Don’t miss this wonderful production but maybe bring a hanky!

Ross Campbell 34 days ago

A great show! Dealing with the difficult subject of death, the show risked the potential of being mawkish. But it succeeded in walking the fine line superbly well. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house. But it leaves you with an uplifting feeling, a warm positivity, as opposed to bleakness. Beautifully written and performed brilliantly by a very talented cast. Highly recommended!!

Superb acting, this will be seared in your memory. A chamber piece of finely-wrought humanity, it may well change your views on mortality and humanity.
