Description

An over-the-top Brazilian with too much botox scrambles to raise her queer son in a backwards American culture where children get time outs instead of chancletas. Ni Mi Madre bares the secrets that threaten to tear one immigrant family apart. 'An aching heart wrapped in laughter and a long white dress' (New York Times). 'It’s a lampoon, a tribute, and reckoning all in one' (New Yorker). 'Shines like lacquer... an impersonation that’s kinetically exquisite' (Vulture). 'An explosively energetic performer, Soria manages to capture the unique mania of the American immigrant experience' (TheaterMania.com).

This is how you do a one-person show. Genuinely essential viewing for anyone wanting to construct and perform solo on stage: this was utterly captivating throughout. What I loved most about this production was that it didn't spell anything out; it's a smart play which trusts its audience to come with it - and, we did.
Strong use of lighting and set, utterly impeccable characterisations and a poignant script. I loved the questions that it raised - 'how many immigrants can't go home to bury their mothers?' in particular has stuck with me. Thank you for bringing this show to the fringe.

I was told on the train to the Fringe by an actor that this was off the top of the scale....and it so was.Huge thanks to all involved - wonderful queering of identity rather than [just?] sexuality.

This spoke to my in so many ways. And so many languages! Grabbed me by the tetas, went straight for my heart and left me whole again. A story SO important of women, OUR latinx women, CARE-fully told, interwoven effortlessly with joy, humour, movement, and LOVE pouring out with every word. Arturo is a sensation. Born with a firey soul, and a powerful grip on the human psyche.
Thank you for bringing your vibrancy and the phenomenon of your life to Edinburgh.
Ni Mi Madre, nos vemos in London soon - I’m sure!

I originally booked this show to fill time before another production, but this ended up being the best thing I've seen at Fringe, and probably even the best thing I've seen, period.

Arturo Luís Soria is absolutely superb. The writing, energy, timing, intensity, and delivery, is unmatched in anything else I've seen on stage.

I have no idea how Arturo keeps up the pace during this hour-long production - barely taking a breath -while delivering such an enigmatic performance, without missing a beat or losing focus for even a fraction of a second.

This is an absolutely unmissable performance, and I'm incredibly grateful for having witnessed it.

Here, high camp not so much bridges the gender divide as obliterates it in a cloud of Louis Vuitton, and Soria’s performance is as flawless as his script is brutally honest, extremely funny, horrifying, heartfelt and wise.

Ni Mi Madre is a masterpiece in tactfully depicting complex relationships, especially those between sons and daughters and their mothers.
