Description

Presented in pseudo-fairytale style, this one-woman dramatic comedy dares to expose what lies beneath the mask of the perfect mother. Discovering her mother's diaries after her passing, the heroine Karin begins to examine the history of their complicated relationship: from the gritty, urban streets of New York to her Swiss mother's manicured orderliness. Engaged in conversations with her mirrored reflection, Karin wrestles with her own inner demons. A riveting and poetic journey employing multimedia and masks that asks, when we strip away the make-up, what is revealed? ****½ (TheFrontRowCenter.com).

Touching show- brimming with empathy and love.

Interesting characters, the Jewish step-mother was flawlessly acted but some character especially the younger self could have a more focused tone and simpler vocabulary in the script to reflect the age of the character.

With regards to the length, the ending at the liminal space could be more focused and shorter to add more effect to the heartbreaking passage of time.

A heartwarming story of a daughter recalling her days growing up with her mother, giving us much to think about in our own relationship with our mothers. The performance cannot be faulted as Karin fleets seamlessly between mother and daughter. 4/5 and recommended!

Powerful, Healing, stellar acting

A beautiful show that could open up conversations every mother and daughter should have before it's too late. The superb acting, coupled with the evocative use of Japanese Noh style masks, brings the complex mother-daughter relationship to life. It’s a deeply moving, memoir-style journey of healing, forgiveness, and compassion— conversation-opening for anyone who’s ever had a challenging relationship with their mother or child.

The show with perhaps the longest title on the Fringe comprises Karin Trachtenberg's performance of her own play about the relationship with her mother. This is a monologue, interspersed with interaction with the performer's recorded comments on a screen, although the latter is also a vehicle for other images, such as family photographs. The heart of the story is the mother's early life in Switzerland, moving to America and struggling to combine life at home with a professional career as a glamorous performer. Although the interaction with herself on screen is rather awkward, Karin is an engaging performer in this watchable play, which leads to a moving conclusion.

I've been 'doing' the Fringe for over a week now, and having seen around 25 shows so far, this one definitely stands out.

Karin has a warmth and gently captivates and interests with her own Story. Beautifully told and wonderful acting - not to mention very moving. An ideal, memorable show to attend - especially poignant for a mother and her grown up baby to attend. My favourite show for both smiles and a little tear in the eye!!!!

This performance was flawless. It's such a lovely mix of storytelling, character, mixed media, self-reflection, and social commentary. The artist offers a deep dive into two sides of her mother, by recounting her own memories and through re-enacting scenes from her life. The unexpected twists and turns kept the audience captivated. I couldn't look away, on the edge of my seat the whole time. As a whole, the story blends a glimpse into the artist's own life, along with a broader discussion of family, the things we say, and then things we never say. I left with goosebumps and tears in my eyes. So very highly recommended!

We went as mother and daughter and we had a great time! It is a touching story where we could relate to every generation throughout the play. A story about reconciliation, healing, compassion and motherhood and being a daughter.

A reflection on mother/daughter relationships. A mother taking out her frustrations on her child but failing ever to apologise, a daughter always seeking her mother's approval but feeling unloved. Will she learn to understand and come to terms with her childhood? Worth seeing.
