Description

A gripping piece of new writing, My Blood is a psychological thriller loosely based on Aeschylus' Oresteia. Set in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis, we follow the lives of a powerful banking family as they deal with personal tragedy. Devastated by their grief and the justice system's failure to hold their corrupt father accountable, the two adult children of the family decide to take justice into their hands. The arrival of a stranger influences the course of events, and as their plan starts to go wrong it becomes clear that not everything is as it seems...

This is the second Oresteia-based new play I have seen at this year's Fringe, after "Blood of My Father" last week. Very different takes on the same material but both compelling pieces of theatre and both inserting a police detective into the plot. "My Blood " takes a fair bit of unravelling if you want to work out who equates to whom in the ancient source, but it works on its own terms and no knowledge of the Oresteia is required. One character seems at first to have strayed in from another mythology or belief system but on second thoughts has Greek counterparts.
All the cast are good and George Loynes as Oliver (Orestes) gives probably the outstanding single performance in all the 20+ shows I have seen - intensely physical and bursting at the seams with half-suppressed emotions, with a huge variety of nervous tics and twitches, some verging on convulsions, and some frighteningly realistic falls and simulated injuries to himself and others.
Apologies for rushing out at the end to catch a last train home.

an impressive production, a fresh interpretation of a classic piece of theatre that has plenty of appeal for a modern audience.
