Description

Following the advice of her (hot) therapist, entomologist Zenab buys a baby doll to reconnect with her inner child. But from the moment she takes it out of the box, she feels a strange connection to it. Through the breakdown of her relationship with best friend Bryn, her encounters with a slightly sinister support group mother and therapy sessions that are a little too intimate, the show follows Zenab as she begins to lose her grasp on reality. milk teeth is a play about lost love, motherhood and loneliness.

No 20 year olds without direct experience of mental illness should be able to portray a grief-driven descent into psychosis this well.
Yet, this group manage to do this with a mastery of the fourth wall, tempo, pitch and humour that makes the experience fun and truly moving.

This play came together with a level of insight and professionalism which was particularly admirable from such a young company. The writing dealt with challenging and potentially painful subject matter in a subtle way which drew the audience in and allowed for unexpected moments of genuine humour. The actors gave performances which coped well with the depths of emotion needed. A serious subject matter for such a late hour, but well worth the effort to see it.

Maybe it was the lateness of the hour, but this intriguing play seemed a little complex at times. However, it stays on the mind and I am enjoying unpicking the themes. An exploration of how motherhood can become all consuming and push out other areas of one’s life - friends, career, identity as a sexual being… In the same way that the child is fake, you are never sure whether the action unfolding is in Zaneb’s head or real. The condescending mothers’ support group leader was a particular highlight.
