Description

Malvern Theatres Young Company is remembered for its powerful staging of Sophocles’ Antigone in 2018 and its five-star (EdinburghGuide.com) production of Dylan Thomas’ Under Milk Wood the following year. This strong and capable ensemble returns to Edinburgh in 2024 with Euripides’ Medea. A heartbreaking portrayal of a mother’s betrayal, despair and ultimate revenge, Medea is as shocking today as it was 2,500 years ago. Director Nic Lloyd’s perfectly scaled production is ideal for the Edinburgh stage and will leave audiences in no doubt as to why the play remains the most frequently performed of all the Greek tragedies.

There were some strong performances in this production and I enjoyed it very much. Toby and the young actor playing the nurse had particularly strong voices and strong presences on stage. It was great to see a young company bringing a challenging Greek tragedy to life with such commitment and passion. It was a very fortuitous meeting on the Royal Mile with Toby and Finn!

A fantastic portrayal of Medea by a very talented cast of young actors whose perfect diction and superb acting made it an easy story to follow. Well done to the Director. It’s a must see.

A terrifically performed play with great acting throughout the cast. The portrayal of Medea was excellent capturing the spawned wife’s despair and thoughts of revenge superbly supported by a hugely talented cast of young actors who’s clear dialogue and character interaction with Medea guided the plot to its stunning climax.
The open stage added to the performance and the reaction of some young audience members as the story unfolded was a delight to watch so engrossed were they in the story they were watching.

This was my first Greek tragedy and I was absolutely amazed! The storyline was strong and the characterisation was very clear. The costumes were beautiful and fit the time period brilliantly. The professionalism of the actors is great for their age. They work well with an in-the-round staging and everything was easily clear to all audience members at different angles. The lighting and sound that was used created drama and progressed the story further. Well done all of you and have a good rest of your time here!
