Description
Click. The story starts with a young photographer. A chance encounter reunites him with a girl he admired at school. He tries to recapture lost years through this reconnection. Click. His Ma-jie (maidservant uniquely typical to past Hong Kong) admires the man downstairs who writes letters for her and others. Click. These parallel disconnected narratives, divided by a trench of loneliness, reveal the underwater emotional currents that can drown mankind. Amid fast-paced modernised Hong Kong, Theatre Ronin’s piece, like the camera, nostalgically shows the impossibility of hanging on to the past. Performed in Cantonese, English surtitles. Please note that while all media gallery content is provided by verified members of the event, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society does not review or approve this content before it is posted. Enchanting and at times enigmatic as we whirl through images and realities in disparate time space continuums. These two beautiful actors - both inherently transformational, physically and emotionally dynamic - weave the strands of love, loss, grief and hope together with their live soundtrack (supplied by the wonderful musician/foley artist) seamlessly underscoring and enhancing this poetic creation.

An incredible performance about loneliness, closeness/separation, and fantasies that we nurture regarding other people. The dialogue is funny and off-beat, but I also straight-up cried through the last 1/3 of the performance because I was so moved by its themes. My favourite thing I've seen at the fringe so far this year (and I've seen a lot!)

This was a rapturous mix of poetry, dance, love, despair, but most of all hope. It's the most gorgeous piece of work I've seen at EdFringe 2024.
