Description

For anyone who’s ever been made to feel like a freak for simply being themselves… Following the success of last year’s sold-out Queer Cabaret at Shrub Coop, genderqueer poet and artist Jude FireSong makes his solo Fringe debut with this autobiographical poetry show about trans/queer identity, relationships, mental health, discrimination, found family and social justice. Jude’s own visual art adorns the walls, in conversation with his spoken words. Suggested 16+ for sex references and strong themes. As the performer is himself disabled and neurodivergent, all performances will be relaxed performances.

This is a brilliant and unique show. An intimate and welcoming performance - characterised by Jude's honesty, integrity, openness, and such clear and truthful poetry, beautifully sequenced to cover so many moments and aspects of Jude's life in a way that never feels overloaded and never feels reductive. It's like peeling an onion, as Jude explores his experiences of depression, of trans identity and queerphobic abuse, of politics and family, and ultimately of hope. Jude creates an environment in which the show feels uniquely tailored to and inclusive of the audience he's performing for - breaking the barrier to talk to us as individuals and as a group, but in a way that feels genuine and inclusive I felt that - in just 90 minutes - we'd really got to know each other and share some truths and experiences in a real and profound way. And I was also so happy to hear Jude take a heartfelt stand for the people of Palestine. This show is very special, and a precious mix of poetry, visual art and genuine audience engagement. It's enriching, honest, and will stay with me for a long time

Went for the opening event of the wonderful night of relaxed and beautiful poetry with poems that were both lyrical, beautiful, bilingual but with some relatable and very powerful experiences, images and experiences. Poet was always very good communicator and conscious of making sure the audience was comfortable, could move and relax. The poems were well read and clear and we could hear them very easy without amplification.

Its rated 16+ but there are also themes of suicide and self harm but written in eloquent and powerful way. But they are sensitive, which is to be aware of but not to detract from the real powerful messages behind these.

I found myself lost in some of the beautiful words and phrases that were simple but thought provoking. I wanted to buy a book of them as they poems you will want to discover again and again.

There is also a selection of art work that is also well worth an investigation.

The venue has range of comfortable seats, a toilet at ground floor level.

Please do go, the pricing structure allows for a what you can pay option so is more accessible which is fantastic.
