Description
A love story. But not a typical one. Harry has dementia. He also uses sign language. As he moves into a new home, he is accompanied by memories that dance like ghosts around him. A beautiful, tender, visually stunning and award-winning show from renowned theatre artist Ramesh Meyyappan, directed by Matthew Lenton (Vanishing Point). ‘Combines tremendous depths of emotion with sheer technical brilliance’ **** (Scotsman). 'Passionate, powerful and poignant' **** (EdinburghGuide.com). ‘A piece of creative genius’ **** (AllEdinburghTheatre.com). Part of the Made In Scotland Showcase 2024. A sensitive exploration of dementia, written and performed by Ramesh Meyyappan. Harry arrives in a care home, confused and disoriented. His carer (what a measured performance by Elicia Daly) is only just learning sign language so she, too, finds communication frustrating. We, the audience, experience with Harry how the boundary between his current reality and memories of his great love becomes increasingly blurred. Not only is the acting impeccable, the artistic team creates an audio-visual experience that gives us a true insight into how this terrible disease may feel, look and even sound like.

Wonderful. The storytelling work with the mirrors was just brilliant. A very moving production with not a dry eye in the house.

A beautiful and moving production that needs to be seen. The writing and performances are brilliant but it’s the staging that takes the breath away. A highlight of this year’s Fringe.

This show is really well put together and acted, but more than that it is visually artistic. The set cleverly produces one beautiful scene after another.

I was so moved that I ugly sobbed for almost the entirety of this performance. A heart-wrenching but cathartic experience and certainly up there with the most powerful pieces of theatre I have ever experienced. The staging is phenomenal, featuring very clever use of two sided mirror screens to great effect. I couldn't fault it.

Love Beyond at the Gordon Aikman theatre (previously George Sq Theatre) is heartwrenching, emotionally so powerful. It allows time and space to explore deaf aging, communication breakdown, dementia and love lost. Written and starring Ramesh Meyyappan, directed by Matthew Lenton (Vanishing Point), produced by Raw Materials and part of Made in Scotland. It is already critically acclaimed so all I will say here is grab a ticket, add it to your must see if you relish emotionally rich and necessary theatre presented and designed beautifully. I am sure it will have a longer Scottish, London, UK and International Life. I'm just so glad to watch it with Zoo Co AD Flo O'Mahony so we could be shiffelling weeping wrecks together. Now we are sitting quietly glad not to be rushing to a next show.
