Description

A Lot To Unpack: Join Seattle’s dynamic Suitcase Dance Theatre as four alluring dancers and beatbox rap artist Maceo Sky take the stage and unpack the “baggage” they carry. Concocting a unique blend of contemporary, ballet and tap styles, A Lot To Unpack reveals pieces of the human condition in a riveting, passionate and sometimes tongue-in-cheek presentation, ushering in a revolutionary new vision of dance theatre. Unconventional vocal prowess and dazzling rhythmic footwork elicit a connection between audience and performer, asking a question of us all: who is in charge of our fate?

For a dance performance, we did not think the stage/prop (aka 1 chair) was a suitable one.

The stage was really just a raised platform which echoed much too loudly during the ballet scenes, and the chair was the same one as the audience sat on, and not suitable or stable enough to execute dance moves on.

Given the above, the dancers appeared clumsy, struggled to maintain balance on the chair and ungraceful during the ballet scenes.

Maceo was not only brilliant in creating the "sounds", but he moves really well so it was a pity he did not do a solo on a suitcase as we saw in the trailer!

Finally, the show ended 10 minutes short so we are wondering if some parts (like Maceo's solo) was left out?

Overall, needs a lot of polishing and a better stage! 3/5.
