Description

Jim Henson meets Oscar Wilde in this gay old romp through Victorian England that offers a modern interpretation of classic English farce – heightened energy, slapstick physicality, and outrageous characters in over-the-top situations – all performed by two actors and a menagerie of fully articulated mechanical puppets. Laced with lavish luxuries, face-slapping humour, and a bowl of soup that’s simply to die for, Lobster Bisque features new and innovative ways of storytelling and the incorporation of clown work to deliver gut-busting fun while engrossing the audience in a visual feast. It will leave you gagging for more.

Lobster Bisque was an outstanding piece of theatre, and is what the Fringe is all about - giving artists the space to be brilliant. Everything Creaner and Tarantino brought to the stage was done so well - and the medium is the message. The creativity, the energy, the choreography, the humour, the puppets! Lobster Bisque felt timeless, as though you could have been watching it in Paris a century ago, or fifty years in the future. You are immersed in Creaner and Tarantino’s world as soon as you enter the theatre, and know you are in safe hands. I look forward to seeing where this production goes, and hope to see it again. It was uproarious, camp, farcical, hilarious. It was Theatre. Brilliant at Breakfast are clearly brilliant at any time of the day.

"Lobster Bisque" is a wild, exhilarating mix of theatrical styles that keeps you guessing and laughing all the way through. It's mischievous, clever, and just absurd enough to make you say, "What a farce!"—but in a good way.

Extremely clever. Unusual and all the better for it. Would highly recommend.

Extraordinarily creative use of different forms and mediums of storytelling. The performers have excellent chemistry and physical comedy skills , and the writing is delightfully silly and lewd and gets some great laughs. This is a real hidden gem - you won't regret giving it a watch

Such a delightful and creative show! For some reason was turned off by the title, but so happy I ended up going. Wonderful puppets and masks and general silliness.

Albert Lin 20 days ago

Absolutely delightful puppetry with obvious love and care put into the performance and the handcrafted props. If you enjoy a bit of whimsy and an original comedic screenplay, this is well worth your time.

Superb, witty performances and imaginative, funny, wonderful storytelling. I loved it.

A quite unexpected show. Yes puppets but didn’t expect so many types. Large hand helds; large heads on actors; large shadow puppets; smaller shadow puppets and puppets on sticks. Plus real actors. And all this performed by just two talented actors. Amazing and a must see!

So beautifully bizarre, I cannot even put into words how much I enjoyed this show - unlike anything I have seen before. A favourite - not just at fringe, but EVER!!!

Jenifer Hosking 24 days ago

Easily my new #1 at the fringe. Insanely talented performers, especially Emma Creaner, who’s voice and physicality was gorgeously rich.

Hugely enjoyable. 50 minutes passed in a flash.

Two performers giving it everything in four or five mediums of entertainment - it was so fast paced that I lost track. The set and costume design adds to the layers of artifice. The direction is superb, hopefully by now (as we saw a preview) the quick changes are slick - though the performer's energy meant that it didn't impact our enjoyment. Only negative criticism is that I wanted a bit more comedy in the dialogue - another set of eyes on the script could make this a riot. However, the physical comedy, bawdy humour and farcical plotting all worked in Lobster Bisque's favour.

Definitely worth it!

Wall to wall gonzo creativity, absolutely riveting, nonsensical, sweaty fun. It almost feels like a roleplay that accidentally got carried away and turned into a full play. See it.

This wonderful show wreaked perspicacity!!

Lobster Bisque

Takeaway soup?

The strength of the show is that the two human players from the beginning not only invite me to engage at super-high-speed but they continue to ask for a fast network acquiescence to connect in uncomfortable layers with familiar bed-fellows of self-aggrandisement and dishonesty and human foolishness artistically and rompingly suspended between six size-morphing puppet characters who become wholly believable as I am cleverly and titillatingly persuaded to work them into life. All simmered in a small and tasty tightly-run pot.

What a great show - funny, clever, very silly, a little bit rude.
The two actors/clowns/puppeteers were masterful in their timing and physicality and the range of techniques shown is a real tribute to their devotion to their craft.
Highly recommend.

"Lobster Bisque" is a hidden gem that my partner and I absolutely adored—it’s easily one of the most unique and campy productions we’ve seen this year. With two brilliant performers and a lively cast of puppets, the show delivers a clever and thoroughly entertaining experience that kept us laughing throughout. Its fresh, playful take on classic farce, combined with imaginative storytelling and vibrant visuals, makes it a standout in every way. This is exactly the kind of unexpected delight that makes the Fringe so special—a must-see for anyone in search of something truly distinctive and fabulously fun.

Brilliant! Slick, charming, hilarious and enchanting! Highly recommend.

Very funny, clever, imaginative production with 2 excellent performers helped by a variety of puppets. Expect the unexpected, you won't be disappointed. What the Fringe should be all about. Venue is on the upper level Victoria Street terrace next door to Scott's restaurant.

I have seen many fringe shows over the years and none were as delightful as this one. I don't usually laugh out loud at shows but I was laughing the whole way through (and so was the rest of the audience) - the energy and commitment of the two performers was consistently at 110%, and the play itself was extremely clever and fun. I rarely ever leave reviews but I really want as many people as possible to see this show. If you like camp - this is it. It's the purest example of what a fringe show should be; intimate, passionate, creative and weird. You HAVE to see it!!!

'Jim Henson meets Oscar Wilde' is super accurate marketing. Rare show that keeps the energy and humour up at 100 for the entire runtime, moving between puppets and actors playing the same characters with inventive stagework to tell a silly Wildean murder mystery. Each scene feels like it has a new gimmick or style to keep things interesting. My friend and I have told so many people that this was our favourite show of the Fringe so far and I can only hope some of them snag tickets. One of those great small theatre/big talent experiences you hope to stumble on during any Fringe fest.

what a darling gem of a show! i saw it randomly and the description is really on point. a little absurdist mixed with clown, slapstick (but charming), really fun over the top characters and creative storytelling through different forms of puppetry and other fun mediums. Really sweet, funny, and light hearted with a good narrative. I hope you get to catch this wonderful piece.

it's slightly hard to find - it's on the 2nd floor over a busy street, so just find the hidden stairs to get up to the balcony from the street below

Lobster Bisque is a frantic farce served hot from the kitchen with a dash of desperation, a splash of adultery and a sinful amount of lust and sweaty to-and-fro upstairs, downstairs and in the parlour.

the piece is written in the tenor of a classic English farce, and it is deliciously, deliriously funny.
