Description

In this compelling and moving solo play, Downton Abbey’s Ruairi Conaghan tells the story of the murder of a loved one and the lasting and unpredictable trauma that flowed from it. At a time when the violent legacies of Northern Ireland’s recent past have never been more important to talk about, this acclaimed show uses storytelling, song, poetry, humour, cinema and Shakespeare to tell this courageous, joyous, uplifting tale of recovery. Performed with raw, courageous, soul-bearing honesty. If we can find empathy, there is always hope. One of Belfast Telegraph’s Top Ten Cultural Events in 2023.

This show was a tour de force - one actor showing us a gamut of emotions and experiences which were so revealing and important. He conveyed the pain of the Troubles in N Ireland via a terrible death in his family and the dreadful consequences. It was a portrait of trauma and how it can affect you to the point that you cannot move due to the pain.
It made me wonder how we allow legislation designed to continue to cover up the past when so much still needs to be heard and understood about what happened?
This was a master actor performing from the heart , harrowing but somehow finally positive and supported by love.

A beautiful interweaving of storytelling and acting! The play journeys seamlessly through one man’s personal, moral and political internal dialogue. Fascinating and indulgent! Highly recommend!

There have been many stories of personal journeys of personal healing and therapy at the Fringe this year. I’ve enjoyed a number of them. There is a subtle but real distinction between story and art. Lies where it Falls is a profound Irish play. Like Synge’s Riders to the Sea it embraces ritual to shape the journey in this case from loss to peace. It’s a wonderful piece of art, and it’s funny.

I’d recommend this one-man play to anyone interested in politics, family, moral dilemmas and/or peace and reconciliation. Well acted, engaging, and such an interesting angle on recent social history. Very glad I was able to see it and very appreciative of the actor’s craft.

Highly recommended. It was my second time seeing it in Edinburgh, and it was just as impactful and interesting throughout, maybe more so. Brilliant acting and staging, and a strong and very authentic and honest story. A great piece of theatre - all in the Bright Umbrella team loved it.

Lies Where It Falls is an incredibly touching theatre play that takes the audience on a raw and cathartic emotional journey. Ruairi Conaghan's magnetic performance fills the stage with a crowd of different characters and voices, telling a powerful and intimate story of loss, grief, trauma, but also of love, family, and healing. He is capable of drawing the viewers in from the very first lines, throwing them right into the heart of his emotional conflict, the traumatic event that sets everything in motion. The play has a strikingly poetic touch to it, crafted in a way that allows to seamlessly blend together moments of lyrical reflection and introspection with moments of fast-paced plot. Yet there is also a movie-like aspect to the way Ruairi Conaghan narrates his story through vivid images and witty dialogue, succeeding in the really difficult task of guiding the audience through a non-linear story relying solely on his solo performance and a few props. This is without a doubt one of the most personal and brave pieces of writing and acting I've ever had the privilege to watch.

I was captivated from start to finish by this raw one-man autobiographical play by Ruairi Conaghan. He has the most extraordinarily powerful stage presence as he recounts the story of a family tragedy during the Irish Troubles and how it has haunted him down the years. Weaving his own words with lines from Shakespeare's Hamlet, he bears witness to human suffering and the complexities of the struggle for peace and justice in Northern Ireland. Despite the seriousness of the content, there is humour in this show, and a satisfying conclusion that points to hope for the future. I highly recommend it, and have already booked to see it a second time myself.

'Conaghan's brave story of overcoming his past experiences and turning it into art is commendable. His inextricable link to the story makes every emotion come to the surface, as you watch the man who has experienced these horrors recount it before your very eyes, making it an experience that will stay with you. Through this dramatic recollection, Conaghan finally finds reconciliation and a personal peace of some sort. It is emotional and moving. The piece is rendered with grace and perfect pacing. It deserves to be seen.
