Description

The story of one of country music's most iconic voices: June Carter Cash. In this raw yet uplifting show, Charlene Boyd gets to grips with a life less ordinary. More than a simple biography, this play with songs sees Charlene explore her relationship with her musical heroine and their shared experience as performers and working mothers. A powerful, personal journey of discovery stretching across the Atlantic from the Appalachian Mountains to the Glasgow high-rise flats, their tale is one of empowerment, endurance and perseverance. “June Carter Cash: The Woman, Her Music and Me" is a clever interweaving of Charlene Boyd’s story with June Carter’s. A beautiful Edinburgh fringe show which shines a light on women’s stories that are often overlooked, and this is a production that’s destined for greatness. Special experience I am so fortunate to have seen.

Never knew June Carter's authorship of iconic songs like "Ring of Fire," this musical play shines a spotlight on her lack of induction into the country music hall of fame despite her five Grammy wins.

Also discovered the Scottish Highlands and the Appalachian Mountains are the same mountain range once connected millions of years ago. Also never knew the intricate intertwining of Scottish folk music, Elizabethan poems, and American country music .

One of the best Fringe shows we have seen. Great acting and singing, excellent musicians and a fascinating story make for a vibrant show. Especially good for lovers of Americana music, but everyone will enjoy this. Five stars.

TRULY SPELLBINDING

I was delighted to see this show. Charlene is just the most amazing actress and gives a heart warming and delightful portrayal of the iconic June Carter Cash. I was utterly captivated. The way Charlene brings June to life in this spellbinding production will take your breath away. Backed by a wonderful bunch of musicians, this belongs on a west end stage.

Feel so incredibly lucky to have seen this at the fringe. This show felt like something you’d watch at the west end. It was so honest, well researched and truly touching. Charlene is the most incredible performer and writer! An absolute talent!

Wow! What a show. As soon as we walked in to the Dissection Room, we knew we were in for treat. Such a dynamic and fascination production. Charlene Boyd was amazing!! What an actress and singer. The rest of the cast/band were also fabulous. Such an innovative use of all the props and space. Loved every minute and not surprised at all that the run has sold out. I’m pretty sure I’ve just seen my top show of this year’s fringe!! Five stars!!

Boyd’s performance fairly stops the heart, full of wit, beauty, musicality, joy and heartbreak, as she twirls around the little cabaret stage and through an adoring audience.

However, as Fringe experiences go, you’ll find few with the quality to match this ... Honest, celebratory and ambitious, ‘June Carter Cash: The Woman, Her Music and Me’ is a fine tribute to its subject, and to Charlene Boyd’s talent and tenacity.

The book is punctuated with humour, the storytelling moves at pace and the short 70 minute run-time flies by. There are some sobering and eye-opening facts about the music industry, and although this production is Not A Musical, music is of course integral to the story.

Boyd produces her very own ‘three chords and the truth’ with a stunning solo performance that resonates and quivers like the string of a steel guitar.

This is one of these shows that engages the heart and brain equally, with its deeply felt salute to an underappreciated figure as well as being a signally impressive play-writing debut.
