Description
1973. A Saturday morning. Jack, 75, waits in a corridor for weekend release to his remaining family. On Sunday, he will be returned. While waiting, he travels his inner landscape, vividly reliving events that took him, underaged, from the safety of his overcrowded family home in Leicester to the swamps of Ypres. Catastrophe tips into 50 years of life lived in psychiatric hospitals as a Ward of the State. His reveries bring him full circle to the moment he stands before us. Stephen Wale trained at Drama Centre London, graduating in 1973.Please note that while all media gallery content is provided by verified members of the event, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society does not review or approve this content before it is posted. Sad, moving and well acted. Excellent production.

Beautifully written and superbly performed. We were completely gripped from start to finish and my husband was moved to tears as we left the theatre. The best thing we have seen at the Fringe this year. Thank you. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Having met an old soldier who fought at The Somme as a 15 year old boy, I knew I had to see this.
What I saw in just under an hour was a tour de force performance played wonderfully by Stephen Wales, the nephew of Jack Hawkins whom he plays so very well and poignantly. Such much so, that I believed I was actually listening to Jack himself, and pictured what he went through.
If you get a chance to see this around the UK, please do. It's a wonderful performance and an important part of our history that should never ever be forgotten.
Definitely five stars.

Stephen truly transports us to the places where Jack has been with just the brilliance of his expressions and storytelling! 4/5 and recommended!

Gripping, heart-wrenching and thought-provoking, this piece is a tribute to all who have or still today suffer from mental illness as a result of armed conflict. The horror of war on the Western Front is unforgettably presented and we are reminded that not all of the victims were left to lie in Flanders fields. Many survived, but their lives were none the less taken from them. Lessons for us all here.

Amazing- impossible not to listen to every word. For me - must see.

Saw this on Saturday. Not my usual fare but what an actor! His timing, nuisance, emotion and flow kept me captivated throughout. If you shut your eyes it was possible to listen as if it was an audio book and one read to the quality of Gildart Jackson. Super!

Excellent, heart-felt portrayal of the life-long effects of wartime trauma based on real-life family experience.. Superb delivery, accomplished, convincing acting painting a vivid and believable story of the lifetime effects of war trauma on the mental health of a man

There's very little stuff at the fringe on the First World War (in comparison to the Second) and this is a well-researched monologue. This sincere performance addresses issues of mental health in a era when mental health problems were a source of great shame.

Beautiful, parred back show which will stay with your long after you leave the theatre. Thank you ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is the show that I will tell others to view. The audience were transported back in time to Word War One, when exuberant youths couldn’t wait to go to war. The depiction of family life made one wonder at the vast changes that have happened to people home lives since then. The acting was truly superb. An absolute must see!

Moving and utterly compelling. A true story beautifully and simply presented. Definitely a case of less being more. Highly recommended …

This was the best thing that I saw in my 4 days of fringe 2024. An hour of captivating story telling delivered by a captivating performer takes you into the mind of a young lad in WW1 and the lifelong impact of his decisions.

Pure storytelling to its core. This is a wonderful piece of theatre that covers some beautiful themes and asks some difficult questions.

A wonderful hour of spoken word theatre where you are taken into the world of Jack and how a man, driven by patriotism and honour, was impacted by war and how it framed his life after those fateful months. Excellent to experience and a summation of everything wonderful in Edinburgh

Excellent little show, a very moving one-man play based on a true family story. Was very impressed with the delivery of a 45-minute or so monologue without a pause, hesitation, or misstep. Would thoroughly recommend the show for anyone looking for something thoughtful, insightful and showing another side of the effects of war.

An amazing performance honoring the courage and patriotism of a young man and the resulting horrors of a war he felt compelled to participate in. Mr. Wale’s performance is both immersive and highly personal, bringing his uncles tragic story to life. Highly recommended.
