Description

Can an Asian with ADHD and dyscalculia pass Elon Musk's Mars immigration test? Set in a dystopian future of space colonisation, Is There Work on Mars? rants about many things: being an Asian who is innately horrible at maths, ableist education systems, living in the diaspora and ridiculous immigration requirements. Feeling like an outcast everywhere she goes, the neurodiverse Chinese woman desperately finds herself at SpaceX's absurd testing lab in an attempt to move to Mars. Is There Work on Mars? was first presented at Theatre Peckham as part of Peckham Fringe 2024.

This show really deserves a bigger audience in a better venue! Really well constructed, and full of provoking questions, it comes across as an all too real future. To cover AI , Musk, institutional racism, Mars, neurodiversity and body ownership deftly in one short show is astonishing.

I had high expectations for this show based on its description and they were generally met. The premise was simple but powerful and the main character was relatable but original. As a woman it was very refreshing to watch some plot that had nothing to do with boy drama or girlhood. I didn't not like that the tone of the play was predictable and once it becomes explicit, the rest of the play does not offer any other topics or plotwists but rather a layering of the same idea that they had already conveyed. I absolutely loved some of the layers tho, specially the one conveyed during the beer pong. I do recommend.

This is a most intriguing show. During the A.I. interview the enthusiastic candidate is made to run from one chair to another. The polite torture inflicted by the tech company becomes hypnotic, in this dystopian drama, that mixes theatre with dance and also has the feel of an art installation (I mean that as a positive!)
This gently disturbing show is one of the reasons I love the Fringe … How often do us Brits get to hear/see what a young Chinese woman thinks / feels about life? …her dreams, her fears and her future…?
