Description
'Oh good God prepare me!' were the last words Samuel Pepys dedicated to his companion of ten years, to whom he gave his life and sight: his diary. The stage is the precinct of his mind and all he witnessed, intimately retelling a decade that shaped London. From the Plague to the Fire, and the people that wandered the pages of his journal: fact, memory and fiction dance swiftly, ignited by the light of a candle. The stage is desolate, every word is a step, entrancing you into the consciousness behind the flame. Please note that while all media gallery content is provided by verified members of the event, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society does not review or approve this content before it is posted. ‘In this body of flame’ was truly mesmerising. The actors' talent and the engrossing story made it an unforgettable experience. Highly recommended for a memorable theatrical treat! The plague really stood out to me as their performance brought the character to life in a way that was both captivating and engaging.

The venue, acoustics, costumes, makeup complimented the underpinning theme of the performance perfectly. The talented cast brought the story to life in the most convincing and creative way. ‘Samuel’ became a broken man before our eyes and no-one could be untouched by ‘the Plague’ as her shrieks and taunting whispers were echoed around the venue. Outstanding talent from everyone involved in this production.

An excellent performance of the back story of Samuel Pepys. The cast, venue setting, lights, props and sound all blended together to give an atmospheric and edgy story telling show. I was engaged from beginning, as soon as the lights faded, to the final words of Pepys. All the cast were on top of their game with a special mention for Charles 1 who set a perfect counterbalance to Pepys and added a glowing brightness to a dark drama.

"In This Body of Flame" transports audiences into the life of politician, Samuel Pepys (Charlie Grant), in this horror-esque retelling as the figures and memories of Pepys' past come back to haunt him. The production does an excellent job of creating a frightening atmosphere throughout, greatly complimented by use of makeup and lighting. The audience, thanks to the intimate venue, is brought right into action. This is aided by the talented ensemble cast whos presence throughout puts the audience on edge in the perfect way. A special mention is necessary to Ailsa Tully who plays Elizabeth, Samuel's wife. Tully and Grant showcase excellent chemistry throughout, really showing the audience the difficulties and strain within their characters' marriage. This is historical drama done correctly. The perfect blend between fact and drama that keeps the audience engaged throughout.

This is a fabulous show. The story weaves, seamlessly, through Samuel's life telling his story from his own writings - his work, his great love Elizabeth, his many infidelities. Clever characterisation is used to portray the events of the time and this is enhanced by the sound, the set and the venue. The performances were extremely well delivered. Go see it if you can.
