Description

A tragicomedy revealing grape culture, starring comedian and internet sensation Toni Nagy and performance artist Sarah Buckner. The show will undress the consciousness of domination without consent while stripping back the predatory and pervasive programming that is choking us all. The thrusting energy of the show is comedy – penetrated by dance, film, storytelling, clowning, stand up and skits. We can’t think our way out of trauma, we must feel our way through it. Toni and Sarah will pervert the pretty by unmasking the ugly truth that grape culture isn’t part of our culture, it is our culture.

These potent performers moved me to tears. I loved their chemistry as a duo. I feel like my own trauma has been seen and understood. There is so much power in what these two have created. The performance is high-energy, creative and brilliant. It’s emotionally moving and fast-paced.

So many thoughts! Parts of the show were incredibly moving to me, parts bordered on brilliance. One part in particular made me tear up and I felt an incredible, rare feeling of inspiration from it. There were so many points chucked at the audience (maybe too many!), and I agreed with pretty much all of them.

I think this show has been altered in response to previous commenters/people walking out - there was no audience participation, and a trigger warning as you walked in. It was made clear that it was THEIR trauma they were “making light” of. Parts felt a bit disjointed - I do wonder if parts were cut out because there was no point which really made me think people would walk out.

However, I did not really find this show funny- especially the skits which felt silly and amateurish. I am not against people making jokes about “grape” - especially those who have experienced it! I think it is a nuanced conversation that these women are contributing to. I was not offended - I just did not mesh with the humour at all. I felt like it somewhat detracted from the overall messages too which is such a shame! Both the women are also SO funny- their monologues were both funny and making clear poignant points!

If they could balance the silly skits, traditional comedy, and important discussion this could be a really powerful show. I would recommend to those who want to be challenged and moved.

This was an incredibly moving play with satirical comedy in the perfect moments to allow for us to all laugh at the dark, real, and resonating subject matter. I really enjoyed the portrayal of grape culture in both silly and serious ways. Sarah and Toni are dynamic and powerful voices.

This was a really extraordinary experience. From laughter to tears, silly to serious, this show was both cathartic and illuminating throughout. I highly recommend everyone hold onto their pearls and check out this wonderful production. What talented, raw, hilarious incredible women.

Honestly not sure where to begin with this show. First of all it is definitely not a 16, needs to be an 18 as the scenes are extremely triggering and portray multiple ‘grape’ scenes in explicit ways without addressing the issue. The trigger warnings on the website are not enough, there should be an in person warning as many audience members buy on the door or with free passes.

There was no warning of audience participation- and they brought a male on stage and touched him inappropriately without his consent (defeating the whole point of the show).

Many people walked out during this performance as it was extremely upsetting.
The over-dramatic elements are not empowering and only seemed to appeal older men in the audience.
An extremely insensitive and inappropriate way to go about “dark humour”.
Do not go and see this play.

"Grape Culture" is the Good Trouble that theatre is supposed to get into. Two brilliant American women take us on a hilarious and horrifying journey through the modern patriachy, and they offer no quarter to the squeamish or the guilty.

Nor should they. In a culture where the overwhelming majority of women and girls have been sexually harassed, assaulted, and/or "graped," and where toxic, entitled males still hold much of the power in government (on both sides of the pond), their voices clearly call "enough!" and they need to be heard.

And it's really good theatre. There is dark comedy, there is momentum aplenty, there is movement, there is multimedia, and there is painful truth in excellent measure. And at the performance I witnessed, there was improvisation that was so perfectly integrated with the odd circumstances that I couldn't be sure what was in the script, and what was in the moment. I can't say more without spoiling it... but it was marvelous.

Go see this if it's your cup of tea. Definitely go see it if it's not.
