Description

Spurs and Scotland star John White was one of the best footballers of the 1960s, however, in July 1964 he was struck by lightning and killed at 27 years old. From humble beginnings growing up just outside Edinburgh, through to football fame and his tragic death, the play shares John's cheeky humour. It also follows the story of his son Rob White, who was just five months old when his dad died. Having premiered at Spurs Stadium, this follows on from the Sunday Times bestseller by Rob White and Julie Welch.

I was so impressed at the actor's mastery of accents and stage presence. I wasn’t too familiar with the story of John White and football isn’t my favourite topic, but I was captured and engaged the entire time because of Cal’s acting. Great play and exceptional acting.

This show was quite magical . The play was fascinating and brilliantly written . The actor was phenomenal, had the audience in the palm of his hand through tears and laughter . Quite exceptional story that was well told , so many people stayed to buy the book that they completely sold out . Youngest member of my group was 11 , oldest was 85 and they all were riveted .

A highlight of our Fringe this year. Really enjoyed this show. An entertaining and very moving story, beautifully told by a compelling performer who had the audience in the palm of his hand.
I am no football expert and I really enjoyed it. Highly recommend.

A well presented tale of the life of the legend that was John White. A well-paced play which I, as a football nut, thoroughly enjoyed. I'll be recommending it to my pals.

A tragic event brought to life in a great performance by the actor, who switched effortlessly between characters. An interesting story.

This show is exactly what a one person play should be. It's beautifully crafted with laugh out loud moments that are nicely contrasted with some really moving moments. You don't need to know anything about football to enjoy this show. It's a truly captivating performance and I'm pleased to have been introduced however vicariously to the great John White.

I didn't know the story at all but found it compelling and a truly theatrical experience. The actor switches believably between John White and his son and in the end it was a very moving show. Highly recommended.

As funny as it is buoyant, the cheeky, chappy character the Whites shared humanises both men in ways only theatre can.

Fans of Spurs and football history will lap this up, but even those who don’t care much for the game will be enthralled with this very human and bittersweetly tragic story of two men who never had the chance to know each other.
