Description

'I think if you’re going to write a ghost story worth its salt you must experience ghosts for yourself'. In 1865 Henry Webster joins the notorious London Ghost Club, hoping to meet and be inspired by Charles Dickens. There he encounters Edward Price, who draws Henry into investigating a haunting at a lodging house belonging to the widowed Mia Sands. At night, the ghosts of two young children wander the house in search of light – while fearing what waits for them in the darkness. Why would a ghost be afraid of the dark?

Perfectly creepy and eerie. One little disappointment though : horror movies are just so much stronger when the Ghost/Monster is left to the imagination rather than explicitly showed, and it's all the more true in theatre. Seeing a full actor play the ghost really took me out of it and ruined the suspension of disbelief, when just hearing his voice and seeing only the red eyes at the end would have been much, much more stronger and impressive. Regardless of that detail : this was horror and storytelling done right.

Fantastic ghost story which felt very M.R. James inspired to me.
Loved it and the use of light throughout.

An atmospheric and fascinating piece of theatre with a very effective lighting plot I.e. hand-held candle light lamps which really added to the tension of this ghostly tale. A strong cast create an engaging and absorbing hour of theatre. Well worth finding a slot for it in your hectic Fringe schedule!

A great, creepy and eerie ghost story performance that might keep you up at night. Highly recommended

Absolutely brilliant show! I love the way that this is lit by the lanterns alone, which (as a theatre tech myself) was a lovely, simple touch that really worked well. The acting was superb and the whole story draws you into a spooky and surreal world of another age. Shout out to the tech for great soundscapes. A really good show for those who enjoy the gothic horror vibe.

A wonderful and moving take on the Victorian ghost story. The cast build up the mystery beautifully and the way they blend narrated storytelling and character voices is so well done. Despite playing into the gothic Victoriana of it all they did a great job of keeping the characters grounded and the performances are really compelling.

This play gripped us right from the start. In a genre different from much of the Fringe, this spooky period story is tightly written and presented and avoids cliches. The experience of the cast shows through and interplay between characters is perfectly timed. Very atmospheric. Highly recommended.

Seriously spooky! This was a really atmospheric production that kept me gripped. I genuinely didn't see the end coming Excellent use of music and some rather natty lighting conspired with a nicely woven plot to deliver a proper ghost story!

The sense of impending menace and mystery is very skilfully developed in this tale of personal loss, illicit relationships and fear. Tension built up slowly throughout the play to its grisly culmination.

Ghost Light was a suspenseful tale expertly crafted by the actors. They brilliantly used light and dark as one of the characters. Definitely make time in your schedule to see this.

The atmosphere is eerie and unnerving throughout the performance. Shadows are cast across the stage by the lamps carried by each of the cast members. Obscured faces and the voices of the ghosts keep up the tense atmosphere throughout the play. Who are they and why are they there? All will be revealed.

It’s an old-fashioned firmly set in the Victorian era and a play that relies on the audience’s reactions and the lights from the lanterns rather than an elaborate set.

It’s an intimate tale, told in the dark for the amusement of us all. Coupled with the show’s healthy reminder of our own mortality, it makes for a great little scare in the evening.

Thrillingly acted by Philip Holden, Nick Blessley, Bizz Portlock, Pierse Stevens and Ian Tucker-Bell himself, this is a strong, old-fashioned ghost story in the finest Victorian tradition; and it’s just as well that it’s not on too late at night, or no one would get any sleep!
