Description

Futuristic Folktales – a dance for hope scrutinises reproductive injustices by re-imagining the tale of the first womb, a folkloric creation narrative often silenced. The performers attempt to tell this momentous tale through storytelling, contemporary movement, Scottish Highland dance and acts of birth and un-birth, alongside an evocative soundscape of experimental bagpipes composed by Malin Lewis. The performance invites audiences to engage in collective resistance and seeks to further dance as a form of political protest – otherwise, why dance? Programmed by Dance Base in collaboration with Assembly. Part of MadeInScotlandShowcase.com

  • Additional information: There are multiple understandings of relaxed performances in the UK and internationally. For Futuristic Folktales here is how we are defining our offering of a relaxed performance for our performances at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. We want to acknowledge that there is no one size fits all, and so have put our energy and resources into the development of a visual guide available in advance, supplying as much information about the performance as possible, so they can decide if the performance is of interest to them - or not. Futuristic Folktales includes loud music including experimental bagpipes, scenes of birth and un-birth and themes of reproductive injustice. We invite audiences to take any breaks as and when they need them during the performance. Audiences are welcome to make noise, and to stim and soothe in ways that are safe and comfortable for them. The company will have ear plugs, ear defenders and stim toys available for audiences which can be collected on entry to the theatre.

This was something I’ve not experienced before. I have always admired dancers for being such organic storytellers, and this was nothing short of that. The performers Bell and Chimutengwende were incredible together. Chimutengwende’s movements felt unrestrained, while Bell’s felt careful, both of which were executed in perfect harmony with each other. I was moved to hear the word “womb” so much on stage. I have always loved and appreciated the idea of being nothing and everything, and pondering on our origin, but this show really let these ideas shine. McLean’s vision came to life with experimental bagpipes and highland dancing, which touched me more because I find myself so consistently moved by Scottish culture. I will admit I shed a few tears in the final segment of the performance, at its intimacy and realising just how much of the world I have gotten to enjoy and just how much more I have yet to. I have no regrets about going to see this show, because I got to think about my place in the world, to love the community around me, my own womb and others’, and to watch some exciting work. I cannot recommend this show enough.
