Description

A twisted exploration of the fragile underpinnings of love, friendship, and ambition. As two couples chase relevance and meaning, a towering neon marionette stalks the stage, challenging them to confront their greed, desires, and identity. In this dark comedy set in New York City, Dan and Emma engage with Bill and Margie in a spiky contemporary drama exploring ambition, love, and betrayal, while subconscious motivations are laid bare by the neon giant. New for Fringe 2024, Funny Guy by Patrick Nash directly challenges us to question our most intimate relationships and understanding of who we are.

Marketed as a dark comedy, but it was just not very funny. I mean, if your entire show hinges on someone suddenly becoming a famous comedian being able to write a half-decent joke would be good, no? Moral drama, then. The problem is that the plot is quite confused and the message too trite to merit the amount of seriousness which the show gives it. I’m being mean, but like seriously. I convinced a friend to watch this show with me and I feel seriously guilty about it, it was that bad. The acting was ok, but not great; Cool marionette tho.

What a wonderful show that is perfectly executed by a wonderful group of overseas actors and must say acting wise the best we have seen and an awesome show that deserves the 5 star rating we are giving as the story is suited to stage we believe and feel can and if done correctly will also become a TV Production as it delves into friendships, relationships and without giving too much away the subject of mental health and more but most importantly you may find yourself in a situation at the Fringe where all you want and all you need is the company of a Funny Guy
Well deserved 5 stars

I love this show!!! It’s kind of a pure story of love and betrayal, and without giving anything away, the neon funny guy is the voice of reason you’ve been looking for.

Not funny ha-ha, but funny how life turns

"Funny Guy" isn’t a punchline-heavy comedy but a deep drama about ambition and relationships. The acting is solid all around, with the actress who played the wife Emma--brilliant performance--making me want more of her. The eerie neon marionette adds a unique twist.

Sound: this show has a unique sound design. I'm not talking about songs. It's the details of emotions that are amplified by humming, and background sounds that many might miss. The sound made the atmosphere (you gotta hear it to believe it)

‘Funny Guy’ is a theatrical fable with a touch of class about it, in both word and performance. Audiences won’t soon forget it either.

Nash has created a real theatrical gem – go and see it while the neon still flows.
