Description
Joe has always been a nerd. In his teens, he hid it. In his twenties, he owned it. Now in his thirties, sorting through his old things, Joe finds a video tape, long forgotten, in an old VCR. He presses play... and something amazing starts to happen! Combining epic storytelling, razor-sharp impressions and a dose of theatrical magic, Fanboy is a nostalgic love-hate letter to pop culture from Fringe First winner Joe Sellman-Leava (Labels). 'A must see' ***** (ThreeWeeks). 'Complex and moving.' **** (Scotsman). 'Fascinating... full of surprises' ***** (BroadwayBaby.com).Please note that while all media gallery content is provided by verified members of the event, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society does not review or approve this content before it is posted. A clever concept, well executed. How much of your past would you change given what you know now?

This show was so relatable that I can honestly say the only way I personally, narrowly escaped becoming a socially-awkward emotionally-stunted fanboy just like Joe portrays himself defending his life before us, was discovering I was also trans and thus ending up an awkward and stunted *fangirl* confronting herself and decades of nostalgic yet neurotic choices instead. That’s partially a digression, but the point is that the emotional place I reached immersed in this performance and living Joe’s own story vicariously makes me feel like I can say or be anything brave or kind or encouraging around Joe and any other Joe-like Joes in his audiences.
This is a must-see experience that I may try to return to before I leave Fringe. The best part is having gotten a ticket at the box office as a snap decision of consolation after another plan fizzled with zero preconceptions on the Box Office’s recommendation when asked “What else is on?” and two minutes to scale the steps alone. Only later would I discover the Force had guided me right where I belong.
I hope you all truly love it as much as I did.
♾️ This show is also great for neurodiverse and sensory-conscious audience remembers. It is clever and creative with production elements that enhance the storytelling rather than cram flashiness for the sake of flashiness. And you’re probably a huge nerd if you’ve gotten this far into my review anyway.
Go see it. And above all, no regrets!
Live long and prosper

A whiz-bang kaleidoscope of fun, pathos and technology.
Joe Sellman-Leava must have a good chance of winning the Fringe Award for most words spoken in 60 minutes!
