Description
Etty… in transit. An inspiring new multimedia play based on the diaries of Etty Hillesum, starring Sarah Finch. This is a story for our times. In the play we witness the journey of Etty from being a rootless fragile woman, unable to cope with relationships and her conflicting emotions, into a strong feisty compassionate woman who refuses to hate – all to the background of the terrors of the Nazi occupation of Holland. ‘Something else about this morning: the perception, very strongly borne, that despite all the suffering and injustice, I cannot hate others.’Please note that while all media gallery content is provided by verified members of the event, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society does not review or approve this content before it is posted. Excellent. A very impressive solo performance by Sarah Finch. The production, sound and music complement without distracting from the powerful dialogue. I was unsure about ‘audience participation’ but this involves a minor but dramatically enhancing change of space towards the end. This is a play for our times. I left feeling very moved by it all and it resonates.

Sarah Finch is excellent in this thought provoking and moving drama. Etty Hillesum was an inspiring thinker in the most extreme of circumstances. I was worried that Finch would not do her justice but she absolutely does. The interweaving of Hillesum's voice with reflections from the Covid lockdown works surprisingly well. I left the venue with much to think about.

Not an easy watch, but an accomplished performance of an interesting script exploring one young woman's experience of the holocaust through the lens of an older woman's COVID lockdown vlog. Good use of multimedia in an atypical performance space. Moving.
