Description

Intrigue. Betrayal. Unconsummated love. Danger. Step into the world of Elizabeth I as she navigates the stormy waters of late 16th-century England. Ascending the English throne in a vibrant but turbulent time she was a brilliant and canny stateswoman, politician and ruler whose own letters provide a captivating peek into her inner thoughts, desires, heartaches, fears, doubts and joys. Intertwined with speeches from the plays of Shakespeare, the letters of the Virgin Queen paint a unique portrait of this remarkable and complex woman.

This was a heartwarming performance showing a softer side of Elizabeth I. I loved the gentle humour and local references.
Skilfully written and beautifully performed, I could easily imagine myself in the company of this powerful yet vulnerable Queen.

Outstanding. A brilliant one woman performance. Very slightly spoiled by weird lighting which was distracting but the actress rose above it to give a convincing and sympathetic portrayal of Elizabeth.

If history was always delivered in such an immediate way, we’d all know a lot more. Her portrayal of Elizabeth’s life as the virgin queen unfolding over several decades, weaves an intimate portrait of a woman who dealt with sexism, the allure of romantic feelings, the challenges of court and international dramas, as well as her painful destiny in disposing of her own cousin, Queen Mary of Scotland both fascinates and pulled on my heart strings. Delivered in modern prose with Shakespeare quotes deftly interwoven highlights both specific and universal concerns of extraordinary challenges in leadership. The device of stripping down her costume and finery in stages, to its most elemental, while simultaneously revealing her humanity is a wonderful device. Amazing solo piece. Not to be missed.

A great show that captivated the audience from the word go: a mixture of Shakespeare (not always acknowledged) a few other contemporary letters, and Elizabeth's own words, telling of the major events and people in her life. Tammy Meneghini makes a valiant attempt at an English accent, only faltering occasionally, but has tremendous stage presence and brought the audience touchingly with her through Elizabeth's memories as she nears the end of her life.
Well worth a watch.

Fabulous stage presence and a wonderful way to deliver a story. Believable and endearing (for one of the few Tudors I can just about stand, historically!) Lovely touches throughout which nicely give a non-linear story of Elizabeth's life, loves and quandries... I did like being the person who handed Her Majesty's book back to her!

Weaving in Elizabeth’s own letters, Shakespeare, Robert Dudley’s own words and a host of other well know names of the time, Levine has created a play that is densely packed with history, but sensitively written. This insight into the mind of Elizabeth, reflecting on her past, is funny, fascinating and ultimately poignant.
