Description

A life lived in the shadows of her father, of her lover and of her own sadness, Eleanor Marx’s light shone fiercely upon fin-de-siècle England, until its untimely extinction. Revolution, passion and the long-lasting nature of female friendship are explored in this tragedy of a woman scorned. As Eleanor sinks deeper into a depression caused by infidelity and abuse, she is kept afloat by the power of sisterhood and Shakespeare, of theatre and of friendship, and by her own hunger for justice. Eleanor fights tirelessly for the rights of others, whilst being completely helpless in her own salvation.

Stunning writing and direction. Stunning acting. If this doesn't get a Fringe First, there is no justice in the world!

Beautifully acted and written, this show has a huge heart and some devastating turns of events. With a gorgeous ode to friendship at its heart and a more sinister relationship amidst this, Eleanor does not shy away from tugging at your heartstrings and making you quite angry at one particular character in the process. I would thoroughly recommend!

Wow what a show!!!!! I met one of the cast members with the advertisement on both sides, on the royal mile 2 days ago! He told me about this show and I told him about the show I’m in… Twelth night fever! And I was truly compelled by his words. So yesterday a friend of mine and I went to go see this show! And by the gods it did not disappoint! I loved the pristine acting, not as single moment where I thought: that could be better or is that meant to happen. I thought it was almost perfect! I only wish I could go back in time and hear her stories in person. But this performance was as close as I could get! Very very very close! What writing and what tanfabulous, acting (terribly fabulous)! Nothing but positive comments about this show! Good luck for the rest of the run!

This moving play, which was first presented in 2023, returns in a revised form. The compression required to fit into a standard Fringe slot has marred none of its charm and poetic intensity. The cast, mostly returning from the first production, have grown into their roles, which they inhabit with full conviction. A must-see. 5*

A tragic story, sensitively acted. Sometimes painful to watch, but I recommend.

‘Eleanor’ is a wonderfully accomplished play which again proves that age is no barrier to talent. The production navigates the delicate balance between raw emotional intensity and neatly balanced theatrical craft, delivering a performance that is profoundly human – in essence, exactly what was needed when seeking to ratchet up the gravitas between crowbarring various irreverent comic acts into the rest of the day!

At the heart of ‘Eleanor’ is the story of Marx’s lesser known (to me at least) daughter, her friendships, passions and relationships, her struggles with and within each and the audience is effectively drawn into the character's tumultuous inner world. The play is scripted powerfully and efficiently, sometimes leaving the audience with more questions than answers, yet in a way that I interpret as being entirely intentional. It is delivered in a compelling performance of 50 minutes by a talented cast who, I hope, are a group to watch out for in the future. Thoroughly recommended!

When I walked in, I wasn't sure what I was about to see but I thoroughly enjoyed the performance. The cast delivered a performance that I was really surprised by. The lead conveyed a genuine emotive experience that captivated me. Some moments made me feel uncomfortable, but that is to the credit of the cast and not the subject matter. A definite must see.

Harrowing and utterly mesmerising depiction both of the life of one woman and the lives of far too many others

What a GORGEOUS show! Beautifully written, the chemistry between the cast was gorgeous. The overall cast was amazing, but a special commendation has to be given to the actors of Eleanor and Dottie, who gave wonderful performances. Made me cry! Go see this x

Highlight of my Fringe experience this year. A very well written and acted play about Eleanor Marx, daughter of Karl Marx, who I knew nothing about beforehand. The cast all played their characters beautifully and worked well together. The end hit me emotionally, showing how deeply the play had brought me into her life. Definitely an hour or so well spent.

Great play. So well researched, written and performed. Extremely moving. Every single one of the cast are great actors/actresses. The fact the cast are also raising money for a worthwhile cause also goes to show what a wonderful group they are. I highly recommend going to this show, you won't be disappointed.

Beautifully written, a story tragically, hauntingly told - a bold and impeccable performance from a talented young cast. Wow! And kudos to the work for highlighting and supporting the cause of emotional/financial abuse of women. A must-see.

Amazing show! Lovely cast and wonderfully written. Really interesting storyline and beautifully performed! Also the message of the play supported by the donations to the woman’s domestic abuse charity was very meaningful and beautiful!

We were absolutely blown away by the brilliant performance of this young and superbly talented cast and we were equally inspired by the exquisitely written script. Very well done to the cast and crew, especially for raising awareness regarding the challenges of dealing with emotional abuse in the context of interpersonal relationships. Highly recommend!
