Description

What does it mean to remember the Holocaust in 2024? How do you bear the legacy of trauma while forging ahead in the 21st century? Jane Elias grapples with these questions through an acute portrait of her relationship with her father, a Greek Holocaust survivor. Realizing she may not be able to grant his wish to one day dance together at her wedding, she instead honors him by taking part in the March of the Living in Poland. A transcendental pas de deux between two generations and a daughter’s love letter to her dad.

This was a love letter to Jane's Father and is incredibly moving. It was well written and acted so well too. I would recommend this to everybody.

A poignant experience so deeply personal in its subject matter and yet so deftly handled by Jane Elias who guides the audience through the shared history of father and daughter.
Generational trauma is certainly not an easy topic to brooch but Elias handles with incredible grace as she re-enacts chapters in her and her father's deeply interconnected lives. She switches frequently between her own persona and that of other characters which, though jarring at first, is a delight to witness as Elias' understanding of her subjects is expressed through the subtle nuances that distinguish each figure. This is all complemented with an understated but effective sound and lighting setup which helps to convey so much more emotion, especially in its unspoken segments.
Do This One Thing for Me lays bare the horrors of the past and finds its solution in the present: love - a love strong enough to cross the expanse of time and go beyond life itself; the love between a parent and his child.
See it while you can.

I was honored to be at this important, deep show. I learned the unthinkable details of tragedy and survival. Jane told them via her family members - simply and economically -making them all the more devastating. This was a beautiful piece of theatre. I'm glad I chose this show. You will be, too. Go.

Jane Elias is an outstanding writer/performer. This show is so quiet and yet so gripping. And truly beautiful. A highlight of this year's Fringe.

Had a mad rush to get tickets for this show but I’m so glad I mad the effort! Easily goes in my top 5 shows at the Fringe this year. I’ve been coming here for 35 years and seen so much - some things have stayed in my mind…this will be one of those things.

The opening music and a lone chair, centre stage, sets the scene for a deeply personal and absorbing show which draws you in and makes you forget the Fringe bustle outside. Jane is amazing as she introduces us to many of the characters from her life interspersed with a recording of her father's memories as a Holocaust survivor. It's intense but honest and it's clear at times that Jane doesn't know what to make of her Father's legacy or her role in it. Until the end.

A beautiful piece. Theatre at it's best- and stunning performance. Characters were so well drawn and I laughed out loud many times. Poignant, clever and incredibly funny. Go and see it!

she waltzes, sidesteps,
then retraces her dad's steps
to heal their trauma

Jane Elias in Do This One Thing for Me mind-blowingly portrays her younger self, her old-school Greek Jewish dad, and a bunch of other colourful characters on the side, to describe the nagging cross-generational trauma of the Holocaust, and the cathartic process of facing and naming the pain and ghosts.
Just when you think there's nothing more to say about the Holocaust.
You will laugh lots and walk away with goosebumps.

I went to see this with my dad, both of us laughed and cried and were swept away by this beautiful show. Jane has created something incredibly special, with wonderful characters and heartbreaking moments. It felt like she had the whole audience in the palm of her hand - we were absolutely with her the whole way through, the quiet moments in particular were extraordinary. I really hope her performance and the show are seen widely and loved by even more people.

Before this, I'd never imagined a great actor could portray so many lives with just a chair and simple stage lighting/sound. This is absolutely the most impressive and heart-touching stage performance I have ever seen. Jane could capture your deep feelings with her incredible acting and beautiful storytelling. Highly recommend!

Watching this show was an incredibly moving experience. The way Jane Elias portrayed her relationship with her father was raw and honest. She has an amazing ability to bring the characters she plays to life with various accents and mannerisms - and she does this seamlessly throughout the entire show. Her story is about family, identity, and heritage - which I feel are themes that anyone can relate to. I laughed and I cried. This performance will make you reflect on your own relationships in a powerful way. One of the best shows I've seen! I highly recommend this touching and unforgettable performance.

This was my favourite show of the Fringe. Beautifully observed, touchingly acted, funny, moving and surprising in turns. I went because it was about to start raining and it was nearby. I'm glad I didn't have an umbrella.

Do not miss this! The impact of the holocaust on a family - and the deep father / daughter relationship of a holocaust survivor. Autobiographical - moving, funny - a difficult subject wonderfully performed an a very simple set by the author .

I feel honored to have seen this special show and recommend it highly. It is a moving story of a father and daughter, their relationship, and the impact of the holocaust on their family through generations. It is performed by only one woman, with only one chair, yet the stage is full of people and life. It is funny, yet deeply emotional. Skillfully crafted dialog, lighting, and music. While Jane’s father asked her to do just “one thing”—which was really more than one thing—she has done so much more. Every day she performs this beautiful tribute to him, a man who survived terrible tragedy, yet lived his life with positive energy, charisma, and so much love for his daughter. A performance I will always remember.

We absolutely LOVED this show. An incredible one woman performance by Jane Elias. A beautiful portrayal of a father daughter relationship, but also the reality of transmission of trauma across generations and the impact of the Holocaust on the second generation and thereafter. I laughed. I cried. I would recommend this one to anyone ready for a brilliant journey which will truly touch your heart.

Just saw this show today. Really liked it. Wove together themes of a father / daughter relationship. The dad is a holocaust survivor which impacts the way he sees and connects with his daughter and affects the way she grows up. I thought the actress structured the piece well - there were definitely laughs and some touching moments with some very powerful history about his journey as a survivor. Definitely worth it! Another fine Fringe find!
