Description

Discover the experiences of Dirmit, the youngest girl in a large migrated family struggling to adapt to city life. Stuck in a small room together, her parents and older brothers try to protect her from life in the strange city, restraining her with customs and traditions. Somehow, she always finds a way to take care of herself. Latife Tekin's best-selling magic-realist novel is brought to the stage. The fantastical story offers strong feminist insights into what it means to be a woman growing up in Türkiye today.

I had the pleasure of attending "The shamless Death" last night, and I was completely captivated by the powerful performance delivered by Nezaket Erden. Her portrayal of Dirmit was nothing short of extraordinary, leaving a lasting impact on me.
The emotional depth she brought to the character was magnificent, making every scene feel raw and authentic.
She moved seamlessly between moments of strength, allowing me to fully connect with her character’s journey. The passion she infused into her role was evident, making the story all the more compelling. I will remember Nezaket Erden's performance for a long time.

Astonishingly intense and captivating performance by Nezaket Erden. Deserves all the praise it is getting here. I wish a broader audience had access to this show. I have no doubt that many women from the Global South will find themselves immersed by it. Five stars from me.

I am by no stretch a critic, but this is a stunning performance by Nezaket in an emotionally charged adoption of Latife Tekin's 83 novel placing Dirmit, the daughter in a family recently migrated from a small village to the city living in a "gecekondu" ("landed-last-night" improvised bungalow) located at a squatted neighbourhood in the backdrop of the post-coup era social and political turmoil of 80s Turkey, under the spotlight. It is impossible to convey the backdrop and all the nuances to an international audience, but there is a solid core of the play that the audience will take home with them.

This play was so moving. Although I am sure that I missed various socio-cultural references endemic to Turkey or the Turkish language, as a migrant woman, the actress' performance hit really close to home. I think this show is a must watch for all women, not only those from Turkey but especially the women of the Global South will see themselves and their personal history. The show has perfect balance in reflecting the dramatic truth and presenting it with comedy. I had tears in my eyes in many scenes, which were then followed by laughter. It is a hidden gem in the festival. I highly recommend.

I have been a theatre critic for 12 years and I am seldom left speechless. Dirmit robbed me of all words until at long last the dust settled, I dried my tears, and along with my fellow audience members I cheered ‘bravo!’ again and again. Be of no doubt, before long we will being seeing Erden staring in Hollywood blockbusters. She is a sensation, as is Dirmit. Five stars. Based on the bestselling Turkish novel, this is a gripping tale of reclaiming woomanhood in the Middle East. Essential viewing at this year’s Fringe. Do yourself a favour: lend an ear to this elegant cry of feminine resistance!

As a local and a regular ar the fringe every year, i was a little apprehensive seeing a show in a foreign language but WOW was i blown away!!! Within minutes i’d forgotten i didn’t speak Turkish and know next to nothing of their culture. With the excellent subtitles and MIND-BLOWING performance of Nezaket I felt like I’d lived in Istanbul all my life! What a gorgeously written and thought provoking hour. I went straight home and bought books on Turkish history and even hope to take a holiday there if i can afford!!!
Please please go see this show, it’s too good to miss. Come back next year please guys!!!!

A extraordinary show about gender, migration, religion and rural communities moving to the big city. Such a powerful story, and the outstanding solo performance by Nezaket was absolutely breathtaking - stunning, funny, powerful and moved me to tears and laughter at the same time. Such an emotional rollercoaster!

If you are reading this, you cannot miss this show! Best thing ive seen at the fringe this year by far!

An immensely powerful monologue narrating the struggles of a free-spirited teenage girl to survive and thrive in a patriarchal, religious and superstitious family from the country, removed to the city. It's in Turkish, but the subtitles are clear and easy to read. I'm sure I missed many nuances of language, character and humour. Nonetheless it's clear this is a skilfully written script, performed with real passion and charm.

Amazing story told brilliantly by a shining star actress. My definite 2024 favorite in the festival. Nezaket is a very talented performer and I hope everyone can get the chance to see her on stage. Show is telling the story of Dirmit who is the little daughter in a big family that migrated to ciry from a little village. This is for sure not the only challenge Dirmit has, but she never stops and finds ways to be her own self.
